Abner Mares eyeing Aug. 18th return in Mexico or Canelo undercard Sept. 15

Moments ago, live on Showtime?s airwaves, WBC junior featherweight champion Abner Mares was interviewed from ringside during the ?Four Warned? quadruple header at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

It seemed fitting to have a one on one with Mares, who was then taking in the Leo Santa Cruz-Vusi Malinga bout which was being contested for the vacant IBF bantamweight crown that Mares once held.

The 26-year old Mares is coming off of a unanimous decision over Eric Morel on April 21st in a fight that was a more exciting that some might have expected.

When asked about his future, Mares noted that he is eyeing an August 18th return in Mexico but also expressed interest in an undercard slot on the September 15th Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez headlined show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It remains to be seen whether the September 15th date would be on pay-per-view or not, as there has been much confusion regarding the next available opponent for Alvarez. Advertisement

Mares had made it known that he would love a crack at WBO champion Nonito Donaire but it remains to be seen if that fight will ever be entertained. Donaire is presently eyeing a July 7th defense of his belt against IBF champion Jeffrey Mathebula, also set to go down at the Home Depot Center.

Reader’s note: Speaking of Donaire, the ‘Filipino Flash’ was spotted hosting an open media workout at the Undisputed Boxing Gym in San Carlos, CA ahead of his July 7th bout with Jeffrey Mathebula in Carson.
