Pasig City, Philippines – All the main participants for Pinoy Pride XIV made weight except for Milan Melindo’s (26-0-0, 10 KOs) Colombian opponent and former WBO light flyweight Jesus Geles (13-2-1, 5 KOs).
Geles, who just arrived the night before the weigh-ins after having trouble with his flight to the Philippines from Colombia, tipped the scales at 115, 3 pounds over the 112 contracted weight for the WBO Intercontinental Flyweight title clash. Even after a couple of tries, the scale yielded the same result, as the challenger attempted to shed off some of the excess pounds after the faceoff photo op.
Ultimately, 3 pounds was simply too much to trim for the tired and drained looking Geles, as he opted to come in overweight, forfeiting his chance of winning the belt regardless of a win.
Melindo is unconcerned. “It’s alright,” a smiling, and confident Melindo told me after the weigh-ins. “I’ll still win,” added the undefeated champ, who also told me that he has a “surprise” for the much taller, and now heavier, Geles.
WBC and Ring magazine flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro was present at the weigh-ins in the Robinsons Galleria mall in Ortigas, and showed off his new Ring belt he won against Pongsaklek Wonjongkam last March in Thailand.
