MANILA, Philippines – Brian Viloria suddenly found himself caught between the devil and deep blue sea the moment he got rid of Mexican Omar Nino Romero Saturday afternoon.
After stopping Romero to retain his World Boxing Organization flyweight title by technical knockout in the 9th round, the names of two formidable fighters with formidable records surfaced as his possible opponent.
Gary Gittelsohn, the American manager of Viloria, revealed that plans are afoot either for Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez of Mexico or Roman ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez of Nicaragua to face his fighter sometime in the next few months.
?We?ll see if HBO or Showtime will take this fight,? said Gitttelsohn, obviously beaming with pride over Viloria?s latest conquest, that he is eyeing a unification battle between Viloria and Marquez, the World Boxing Association champion in the 112 lbs class.
Gonzalez is also in the mix owing to his sterling credentials, but Gittelsohn said that it would all depend if Gonzalez is willing to move up in weight.
The 23-year-old Marquez sports a 33-2 record with 25 knockouts, while the 24-year-old Gonzalez boasts of a 32-0 card with 27 knockouts and Viloria now has a 31-3 slate with 18 knockouts.
Whether the 31-year-old Viloria will end up meeting Marquez or Gonzalez or somebody else would be determined in the weeks to come.
But Viloria would rather put boxing at the back end for the meantime because of a promise that the fighter made.
Viloria and his wife, Erika, are going on a vacation in Europe this week.
Viloria said they haven?t really spent honeymoon even if they?ve been married the last two years.
?I promised her that after this (Romero) fight we?ll go on a trip,? said Viloria, who didn?t let up on training even after his fight, a TKO win over Giovani Segura last December.
?I went to the gym and trained so right now what I want to do is rest.?
The guy truly deserves a break.
