HBO Sports is reporting that last Saturday’s Cinco de Mayo showdown between undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather and former jr. middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has garnered 1.5 million pay-per-view buys. Generating $94 million in revenue, that makes it the second highest grossing non-heavyweight pay-per-view event in the history of boxing.
While it’s unclear if the 1.5 million buys is a final count, it’s clear that the event was a resounding success, fulfilling the guarantee of Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer that it would indeed be ranked second only to Mayweather’s record-setting clash with Oscar De La Hoya back in 2007, which generated $137 million after 2.4 million pay-per-view buys.
