Although many were surprised by the competitive nature of last Saturday’s main event between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto, one onlooker who wasn’t surprised by the back and forth action was Floyd Mayweather’s father, world-class trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. “A lot of people thought Floyd was gonna stop Cotto, but I said from the beginning it was going to be a tough fight for Floyd and that Cotto would go the distance,” he commented when asked for his thoughts on his son’s performance. That being said, Sr. did think that Floyd could have made it a lot easier on himself had he chose to box more as opposed to brawling off the ropes for the majority of the bout.
“If Floyd would have continued to box him like he did in the first 2 rounds and kept him in the center of the ring, he probably could have made it an easy fight, but he fought off of the ropes a lot and abandoned his jab,” he explained. “Cotto is a tough fighter though and even when you look at his losses, he’s never had someone just whoop his ass. He’s always come to fight and Saturday night was no different. I knew he would be a tough fight for Floyd though, man, and honestly, he can’t be in too many fights like that. Floyd shouldn’t be in too many fights like that.”
Although Mayweather clearly won a f airly wide unanimous decision, the fight was a lot more competitive in spots than many experts had predicted. Does Mayweather’s performance mean that we may have seen the best fighter in the world for perhaps the last time, or is he just getting started with this new “fan-friendly” style?
