Latest example of the cupidity and stupidity which boxing is infested with comes in the dramatic disclosure Minday night that “world champion” Lamont Peterson, the former homeless waif from Washington, DC, who shockingly upset Amir Khan in the nation’s capital, failed two prefight drug tests in the runup to their May 19 rematch in Las Vegas. That fight is about to get officially canceled by promoter Golden Boy and a replacement is being searched high and low to fight the Bolton Wanderer Khan. GBP matchmaker Wric “Gangsta” Gomez is burning up the phone lines. With Peterson coming up dirty twice (synthetic testosterone), Golden bossman Richard Schaefer’s knickers are in a twist because he was never so notified by the Voluntary Anti Doping Agency. Herr Schaefer is right to be upset but it’s Khan’s father, Shah, who is more properly focused on a righteous remedy. Khan’s father said the result of the first bout must be changed to a no contest. What with Nevada State Athletic Commission’s Keith Kizer telling the Los Angeles Times Peterson made an admission to use banned testosterone before beating Amir, the father is right on target. Correct Khan’s pro mark to 26-1-1 NC and alter Peterson’s to 30-1-1, 1 NC. But I’ll go further. The IBF and the WBA must immediately strip Peterson of their 140 pound world title and the IBF, the WBA and the Nevada commission must suspend the American fighter. Maybe all this time that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been a Paul Revere on mandatory drug testing in boxing, he’s been completely right. Mayweather doesn’t seem paranoid when incidents like these mar the sport. In this case, words spoken to Examiner colleague Chris Robinson and published on July 27, 2011, Peterson expressed thoughts on the need for drug testing. Those words have come back to haunt him now…as seen below: ?Always. Anytime he (Mayweather) feels strongly about people cheating, and throughout boxing history you have had some who do cheat. Anytime you can eliminate that and everybody is on the fair stage, I think it?s a good thing.? ?Oh yeah, it exists. I mean you can?t just really just point your fingers at certain people but it?s a sport, it?s a business, money is involved, and people want to win that bad. I know there are people that cheat.
