At the post-fight press conference following Floyd Mayweather?s victory over Miguel Cotto, fans and insiders alike were buzzing over the excellent action that had taken place. Over twelve tense and tactical rounds, Mayweather pulled out a twelve-round unanimous decision but Cotto applied serious pressure throughout and the scores seemed much closer than the 118-110 and the two 117-111 cards that were read.
Speaking to welterweight contender and former junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander, the St. Louis native admitted that the fight was far tougher than he expected.
?Floyd got hit way more than I thought he would but I thought he pulled it out,? Alexander would state, opening up our brief dialogue.
Mayweather started to trickle blood around the eighth round and again, it was something completely new for Alexander to take in.
?Man, I never saw that,? Alexander said of Mayweather?s bloodied nose. ?But he?s getting older and of course you?re going to get hit more. Of course your reflexes are going to slip. But he still looked good. Cotto got some good shots in but you could tell at the end of the fight who was doing the most damage.? Advertisement
Asked what he would like to see next from Floyd, Alexander agreed with the consensus as he pointed to a date with Filipino star Manny Pacquiao.
After Mayweather?s September knockout over Victor Ortiz, Devon Alexander was adamant about how easily Mayweather would defeat Pacquiao, but after this evening?s performance, his stance has seemed to change.
?Gotta be the Pacquiao fight. Everybody wants the Pacquiao fight. After seeing tonight, it?s going to be interesting. I?m always going to root for Floyd but it?s going to be real interesting.?
