Boxingsocialist had a chance to catch up with the champion Brian Viloria to discuss his upcoming fight with Omar Romero. Brian will be defending his WBO Flyweight title in the Philippines. This will be the Trilogy between Brian and Omar Romero in which Romero won the first fight, second fight was originally a draw but then changed to a no contest because Romero failed the post fight drug test and now Brian is looking to settle the score on May 13th. Boxingsocialist- Congratz on your victory by beating Giovani Segura. Alot of people weren’t giving you a chance to win that fight because Segura was on a roll. How tough was that fight for you and did you think you were going to stop him?
Brian Viloria- To be honest, my hard work in training camp made the fight easier than I thought. I also studied my opponent really well and prepared myself for his style of fighting. I didn’t think I was going to win in the way I did, but at the same time, it didn’t surprise me that I did win the fight.
BS- After your loss to Carlos Tamara, he has gone on to lose 3 fights but you went on to win 4 straight. Do you want to rematch him or is there nothing there to gain now? Maybe if he picked up a belt?
BV- There isn’t anything to gain at this point, but if the opportunity does present itself, I’m not one to back to down from a rematch.
BS- How has your training been going for your Trilogy with Omar Romero?
BV- Training has been long and rigorous, but am very satisfied with how the training camp went. I’m physically, and mentally ready for the fight, and I can’t wait for fight night.
BS- In your first fight you loss by UD and then soon after that in the rematch it was a draw that was later turned into a no contest because he failed the drug test. What went through your mind? Do you think that had anything to do with him winning the first fight because he might have been on something?
BV- I was more disappointed in myself and how I performed that night. Regardless if he was on drugs or not in the first fight, I thought I didn’t do what I had to do, and perform to the best of my abilities to garner a win. I know what I am capable of doing and that first fight, did not show case it.
BS- Since you were a Victim of losing a fight because of possible drug enhancement, what is your stance on Mayweather wanting fighters to be drug tested?
BV- Drug testing should be mandatory in not just championship fights but in all fights for the protection of the fighters. It also helps keep the fight on a level playing field.
BS- Are yall going to have Olympic Style Drug Testing for this Rematch, just to be on the safe side?
BV- We made sure the Game and Board, and Sanctioning bodies are aware of Nino’s history and were adamant about the drug testing for this fight.
BS- How do you feel about your fellow Filipino fighters like Nonito Donaire moving up in weight and winning titles?
BV- I’m proud of all the Filipino fighters making splashes in the boxing scene and winning world titles. It’s great to see the rivalry between the Mexican and Filipino fighters bringing in more excitement and fans to the sport of boxing.
BS- Right now the biggest Filipino icon is Manny Pacquiao, how do you see his fight turning out with Timothy Bradley?
BV- It should be an entertaining fight between two fighters that does not like to back down. I think Pacquiao’s speed and ability to jump in and out of range will be too much for Bradley. Bradley will try to put up a fight but Pac’s accuracy and power will bring Bradley down in the 10th round.
BS- How do you want to be remembered in boxing?
BV- The resilient fighter that keeps proving doubters wrong. Also I want to be remembered about the exciting fights that I bring into the ring.
BS- Right now you have 33 fights under your belt, at what age do you want to retire or say hey, I’ve accomplished everything I wanted.
BV- I don’t know at what age. But I’ll know when do come to that point in time when I have to decide.
BS- Anything you want to say to your fans in Closing?
