Geno’s Boxing Mailbag: Weekend Edition

I saw some skits from Mad T.V. this week and I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not a fan of the show for the most part, and I think that it really pales in comparison to Saturday Night Live, but their take on Kenny Rogers is hilarious. They did a spoof of that horrible candid camera rip off: Punk’d, hosted by Will Sasso as Kenny Rogers. He was pulling a rib on Clay Aiken and sent a delivery man to his door with a “rhino turd.” Well, the prank falls apart and a drunk Rogers runs over and kicks Aiken in the grapes and says: “You been punk’d!” I thought that it was great and as I searched the net, I found more Kenny Rogers on Mad T.V. where he was singing duets with people like Cher and Marilyn Manson, and they go way overboard insulting the poor guy here. They also do a skit based on the MTV show: Jackass, hosted by Rogers of course. I wonder what he did to piss them off?

I watched an action film marathon on last week and I don’t care what anyone says, Steven Seagal rules. When he said: “They may be above the law, but they’re not above my law,” it was great! I want to say that about my boss, when they catch him looking at adult magazines and let him get away with it…or any other infraction of the rules. I also watched a great movie with Chuck Norris: The Hero and the Terror, where Norris takes on this homicidal monster. It was tremendous. My wife had approached me early in the day and asked me if I had any plans for the day because she wanted to go over her family’s house with me in tow. I told her that I had very important plans that I could not possibly break. When she left the house, I laughed maniacally and said aloud: Action movie marathon. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m cool with my in-laws for sure. They are way better than the majority of my family, but still, my in-laws or Chuck Norris? Boy, that’s a hard decision.

Did I ever tell you about my other job? Well, I work at a chemical plant as the security/safety guy and dispatcher. Anyway, we used to have the Internet without any restrictions. It was great because I could check my email and even go to boxing sites to check the news and the competition. So, I come to work and click on the Internet Explorer and then attempt to check my email, but I get this “access restricted” notice. I said to myself: “This is odd.” I then tried a few other sites and the same thing arose. Hmm…this can’t be good. Well, I looked up the history of the internet use and wouldn’t you know it, porn. One of the rejects that I work with was looking at adult sites while on the job. We lost 90% of our Internet privileges because of one @#$#@$. Now, I am really pissed off. So, my fellow worker was brought into my boss’s office for reprimand and I thought for sure that he was going to be fired. Well, do you know what his excuse was? He said that he didn’t know that he wasn’t allowed to look at porn at work.

Ignorance of the law isn’t an excuse…well, here in my world at work it is. He was given a warning and now there is a memo that states specifically that you cannot look at “adult websites,” but isn’t it a little too late? We can’t even surf the freaking net anymore! My point in this matter is that if you don’t think that it is incorrect to look at adult sites while at the workplace, then you are too stupid to live. I’m sorry about the ranting…I’m just very upset.

Okay, before I ramble on forever, let me get to some of these boxing questions.

DID YOU JUST INSULT TONY TUBBS?

Geno,

Naseem Hamed’s style certainly wasn’t “European”, it was entirely Irish, completely illogical and worked brilliantly. It’s creator was Brendan Ingle who was Hamed’s first coach and you can see earlier versions of this chaotic but magnificent style in the work of Herol Graham (who gave everybody fits!) and Johnny Nelson (who has been a cruiserweight champ for how long?) This style was perfected by Hamed and does not resemble anything else practiced throughout Europe.

Whilst I accept that many of Lennox Lewis’ bouts before Manny Steward got involved were fought in an “upright” stance, I would like to point out that the brilliant defensive work done against Razor Ruddock (a fight many expected Lewis to lose) was certainly not “European” style. He was too relaxed, had too much lateral movement to be termed “European”. It actually reminded me of the young Ali when Ruddock was missing so wildly in that first round. It was a glorious moment for me.

I make the prediction that black Americans will soon once again dominate the heavyweight division, their American technique is clearly more relaxed and more effective.

The problem is that they got lazy, we are now back in the days of Greg Page and Tony Tubbs only it is now legitimate to come in at a weight we once used to be shocked by.

Those Eastern-Europeans are there to be hit, with their stand up style, but who’s gonna’ hit ’em? Some out of condition American who’s carrying three stones of extra weight because he thought it would be a good idea against such a big guy?

We need another wrecking ball sensibly sized heavyweight with speed and desire, we need the next Tyson.

Is 16 stone just a fond memory or is it the maximum sort of weight a real athlete can carry whilst actually being vaguely athletic?

Your opinion on the weight issue Geno?

Peter Stitt

Peter,

What is going on my friend? I have watched the Lewis-Ruddock bout several times and it was an amazing night. That was the same night that Meldrick Taylor lost by TKO to that huge guy, Espana… I initially picked Razor Ruddock to win, but at the last moment, I said Lewis by UD. When he went in there and pulverized him in two rounds, I was impressed. I have always been a big Lennox Lewis fan and I have always predicted him to defeat Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield. Ruddock’s loss was partly his fault too because his new trainer, Floyd Patterson, had him jabbing to the stomach of Lewis, leaving him totally exposed. Lewis just landed the right punch at the right time. Now, as for blocking. Ruddock totally telegraphed his punches. It was really impressive for Lewis to cash in with that one punch, but Ruddock was overrated, although I am still a big fan of his. His bouts with James “Bonecrusher” Smith, Tommy Morrison, Michael Dokes, and Mike Tyson were great.

If you look at Lewis against Phil Jackson, you realize just how much affect that Steward had on his man. When Oliver McCall pulled the upset, Lewis was a lunging machine…desperately trying to land that right hand. He didn’t look great against Frank Bruno or Tony Tucker either. He was a raw talent with the straight up, European style until Manny really turned him into a complete fighter…a monster….the best heavyweight in a long time.

America’s hope right now is still Lamon Brewster, I think. He takes one heck of a punch and when properly motivated and trained, can defeat nearly anyone. I like his chances of unifying the titles. David “Nino” Rodriguez scored another first round KO and is a guy to watch in the future when it comes to heavyweight boxing.

Did you put down the great Tony “TNT” Tubbs? I am a big Tony Tubbs fan. No other heavyweight that big possessed his speed and timing. He was fantastic and beat Riddick Bowe in their meeting for sure! He may have been a wee bit chubby, but he didn’t fight like he was.

We do need the next Mike Tyson. Next Mike Tyson…where are you?

HOW MANY ROUNDS IS THIS?

Geno “the boxing supremo” mcgahee,

I noticed that in some undercard fights, the bouts had only 4 rounds. I understand that fighters who are in these fights are just new in their pro career. My questions are:

– How may fights will it take before boxers can be in 10 or 12 round bouts.

– Or is it something determined by other factors such as the fighers’ readiness to undergo longer fights? If this is the case, who determines his/her readiness?

– Does the fighter’s engagement in short bouts count in their boxing records regardless if these were just 4 rounders or 6 rounders?

Thank you, more power, and keep on ramblin man.

Nuj

Nuj,

What is up my friend? First, the 4 & 6 round bouts do count on their professional record. The person that usually determines when the fighter move from 4 to 6 rounds and so on is the trainer. The trainer will monitor their boxer and see where they stand before having them move up in rounds. Boxing Supremo? I love it! I will add that to the mountain of nicknames that I have. Thanks… and more power to you as well.

PACMAN, IS THAT YOU?

Geno,

do i get the respect of the world after my fight with larios

Manny Pacquiao

Manny,

I think that you may just be an impersonator, but you are more tolerable than an Elvis impersonator, so I will answer your question. Should you begin to sing: “In the Ghetto,” I may be forced to end this mailbag right now, mister! Okay, Pacman, you have had the respect of the world since your wins over MAB and EM, and the draw with Marquez. You didn’t need me to tell you that…

THAT IS AN OFFENSIVE QUESTION

Geno,

hi muy!

“ketal?” means how are you?

“bien bale de tu yu mailbag”- means your mail bag is really great

ive been reading your mailbag for months but this is my first time to ask you something.

i just would like to ask is there a such a boxer who relies more on his offensive/deffensive skills?

if so can you name me the best offensive boxer today and also the best defensive boxer and if they would meet in the ring, who do you think would win?

this also connects to my other question, many commentators said paquaio has an all out punch so he might belong to the category of offensive fighters, and juan manuael marquez with his style is a defensive player, got also a “100% defense” i saw printed on his boxing shorts. when they fought it ended up draw.

so how did marquez did it scientificaly? is he much a bigger guy?, i saw the fight, manny was seemed big in the first round but after that it seems that pacquaio turned into a kid when he cant even touchd the face of marquez anymore in a solid punch

one other thing if a boxer wants a knockout and put 100 percent in his punches it leaves him defenseless right? or can a fighter put a 100 percent offense but still got a 100 percent defense?

i just got this theory in my head that a fighter in a match that has an opponent that is much very equal to his or should i say in the same near level must put his 100 percent offense to have a knockout taking the risk of being open or defenseless.

your opinion thanks?, i hope you got my point, my english is not that as good.

im a filipino, i love boxing, in out city we speak chavacano, a little like spanish,”chene quidaw!”,- this means take care in our dialect

Ed

Ed,

Ketal? Not bad. bien bale de tu yu mailbag? Thank you very much. I try to make this the best mailbag on the net and thanks to you people, it is! An offensive machine is a good thing, but a defensive whiz can usually get the win. When Julio Cesar Chavez, a great offensive fighter, faced Pernell Whitaker, a great defensive fighter, the punches of Chavez were nullified. The same thing happened when David Tua lost to Chris Byrd. Right now, I would have to say that PBF is one of the greatest defensive fighters in the game and Bernard Hopkins is somewhere in there too…and I guess that I can’t forget about my Winky. Winky Wright is difficult. As far as offensive, Sam Peter is very good, the Pacman, and Diego Corrales. Styles make fights and a guy like Sam Peter could be exposed by a great defensive boxer and James Toney is pretty darn good, so there might be a good example.

There is a definite opening when somebody throws a punch, but I won’t say that they are defenseless. Many fighters are so quick or their timing is so good that they can get away with multiple hits without being touched. A guy like Acelino Freitas is so awkward that he is hard to hit no matter what. So I won’t call them defenseless.

Chene quidaw all!

ANONYMOUS REVEALS HIMSELF

Geno,

The webpage didn’t load properly and the “Your name:” and “Email:” text didn’t appear, so I decided to just stick to my question. I apologize. However, thank you so much for the response. You’re awesome!! You really care about your fans. I wish there were more of those like you. You really make the experience here more than just worth while. Keep it up. I’ll continue to be your and Pacman’s fan.

Best regards,

RealBoxingFan

Real Boxing Fan,

I know what you mean about internet malfunctions. I was only able to download half of the Paris Hilton video. Man that video was green…looked like the Incredible Hulk doing his thing. Now, where was I? Hey man, if you submit a question, I will try to answer it. I and the rest of RSR try to be different and keep standards because we care about the fans and because we are fans. I’m not going to give a crappy rival website any advertisement, but I do shop around because I am always interested in seeing how the rest of the boxing journalists are doing. Anyway, I went to this site and clicked on an article. It had to be 10 pop up ads that hit me and once I got rid of them all, I realized that they had placed ads inside of the article as well. Safe to say that I will not be returning to that site. If I were that writer and my boss put all that crap in my article, I would go to his house and kick him square in the grapes. If I were employed by that website and hypothetically that did happen, I would approach the house of this @#$@#head and knock on the door. “Geno, my good man. Did you see what I did with your article? Isn’t it just fantastic to have pop up ads by the dozens when you first click on it and then, right when you think that you are advertisement free, I add more. Oh, isn’t it glorious?”

Can you guess what happens next? Are you good at hangman? I’ll let you figure it out then. He would be: K_cked in t_e gra_es. (Solution: Kicked in the grapes) I would also scream “yeehah” while I did it, because that is how I roll. Since I talk about kicking people in the grapes so much, I am now trying to get a deal with Nike or Adidas. When I kick somebody in the grapes, I wear Nike’s. They could make a shoe called: Air Geno’s and gangs would no longer use guns…they’d rely strictly on their feet to end a fight. So Nike, I am ready to make that million dollar deal.

GINGERBREAD MAN

Geno,

You know what since we talk on your bag about crazy movies that some people would never hear of what do you think about the movie gingerbread man with gary busey? i was in the mall the other day (in the Philippines) and saw this pirated DVD of that movie, where GB is the gingerbread man (coincidental?)and of course i didn’t buy it. The story is GB was killer and he gets caught and dies from the death sentence and his mother gets his ashes and makes a batch of gingerbread cookies and sprinkles them on the batch. Meanwhile some “dude” drips his blood on the batch and magically the gingerbread comes alive and comes back for revenge…HAHAHA…where do they come up with this BS??? HAHAHA…anyway a boxing question many people say Manny has an awkward style and i’ve posted before and said that he actually has straight line fighting style akin to those of kumite(karate) fighters i hope some people realize the genius behind his style. I know many in the West don’t know or have not seen his style because the Western style boxing is different from the East. I hope some look at kumite fights and study the style and see that manny’s style is like that. Straight line fighting at its best. Because the quickest way to get to two points is by the straight line. That’s the philosophy behind it and that’s why he is so quick, explosive and effective.

Calipinoy

Calipinoy,

You purchased the “Gingerbread Man?” There are so many bad horror movies out there and even though I have not seen this one, it doesn’t seem all that good judging by the story and the fact that Gary Busey is in it. You have to love Busey… I tell you. I am a sucker for horror movies and most of the time the guy at the video store laughs as I walk out the door and probably says: “That idiot just rented that horrible movie!” Sometimes, I get a good one like: Dog Soldiers, which I completely recommend. It is a crazy werewolf movie…the best one ever. Busey was in a werewolf movie: Silver Bullet. Now that was a movie…a werewolf priest going crazy on a town and chasing a poor kid in a wheelchair. I had no idea that werewolves disliked the disabled.

Gary Busey is the man. Have you seen him in: Surviving the Game? It’s about these rich guys that pick up homeless guys, bring them to the remote wilderness, and hunt them down like animals. Ice T is also in it and my god is it ever good.

Manny throws many straight punches and those do so much damage to his opponents. Juan Manuel Marquez can testify to that.

MORE FROM GOOD OLD WINSTON

Words from Winston

Geno,

Im back just as I promised. I knew that you missed me a lot, lol. The GBBF (Geno Bambino Boxing Federation) really sounds so awesome to me. Thanks for appreciating my comments. I’m afraid that I’m beginning to like you too, lol. But let me get straight to my questions before I fall in love to you and before this comments turn into a love letter, lol.

1. What’s the difference between the WBC International to the WBC? Is the WBC International have the same governing members and officials with that of WBC? Is the WBC International was created so as it serves as a title eliminator for the current WBC title holder? (See, I’m really confused coz’ of these so many professional boxing bodies).

2. Why is it that MAB was not strip of his title for not defending it against the number 1 contender which is Pacman?

3. Do the International Olympic Committee has the right to regulate or in any way can step in to professional boxing today so as to unify all these conflicting and confusing boxing bodies?

Well, Geno I hope you will enlighten me to some of my questions. These are only a few of my many questions to you. And like my novel, this will also be a never ending. Till next time Geno. I’ll be right back. And remember, I LOVE YOU. (ooppsss)

Winston

Winston,

What is going on my good friend, and I emphasize the word “friend.” This is RSR, not some sort of date line. The WBC are crooks just like the rest of them and they have created the WBC International brand to squeeze more money out of the fighters with BS sanctioning fees. They claim that it helps the sport because it gives fighters that exposure and all this nonsense, but they are in it for the money. The more titles that are out there, the farther the sport falls into obscurity. Look at the NFL. Wouldn’t it be lovely if they had 8 championship teams each season? Wouldn’t that make you tune in more? The WBC/IBF/WBA/WBO are all garbage, especially the WBC and the WBA with their super champions. I could just picture the group of these selfish idiots as they sit around: “Hmm. What about a super duper champion?” “Oh that is a great idea. I don’t think that boxing will be right until we have fifty champions per division. How about a Superman Champion…you know, the boxer that looks most like Superman.” I want to kick these idiots right in the grapes and start burning all of these title belts.

The rules are the rules and the rules can’t be broken, unless there is a lot of money involved. MAB brings in the money and he has De La Hoya in his corner. They don’t want to piss him off. So, they are not going to force their hand in this matter. They are going to allow MAB to fight as many other fighters as he wants, but all roads lead to Pacman anyway. The promotion behind him knows that he doesn’t have much left in the tank and they are going to throw him in there against Manny no matter what he thinks. It’s all about the nookie…I mean money.

Let’s keep the Olympic committee out of this. We don’t want them in charge…too many rules. The referees look like they’re dancing as they continually warn the fighters during an amateur bout.

Winston, although you are a dude, I think that it should be said that I am adding you to the list of ladies that dig me… I hope that you don’t mind, but I’m trying to compete with Jose Antonio Rivera. He has all these women writing to him and asking him what his favorite color is and nobody asks me. For the record, my favorite color is black. That’s for the ladies and the occasional dude that emails me with loving.

BURTON-ELDER

Geno,

I always enjoy your column, especially when you begin the rambling, it’s hilarious! You are one of the VERY few who can toss in some healthy dose of good ol’ fashion humor into an otherwise bloody and serious sport, which is kinda refreshing. Still, your knowledge of the sport is impeccable, perhaps even encyclopedic. I (almost) daily frequent your sight, and I love your mailbags. Props to you and staff!

Have you seen the Elder-Burton bout? How are the careers of these two warriors doing nowadays? What’s next with Paul Williams? I mean the singer… Nah, just messin’ with you there. What’s your top 5 best fights of all time in terms of action and drama? Regards and Godbless. Keep it cool.

Vicv

Vicv,

I can’t help it my friend…I am a rambling man. I really appreciate the props and I’m slightly obsessed with the sport and I watch it at every opportunity. Keep coming to the site because we have BIG plans for it in the near future. I can’t really go into it, but you are going to be pleasantly surprised along with the rest of the RSR readers.

Ebo Elder-Courtney Burton was a war and an unforgettable fight. Elder has made his way onto the reality show: The Contender, season two, and Burton is slowly fading into obscurity. He has 5 straight losses if you count the horrible decision win over Emanuel Augustus. It seems that Burton has ran his course as a fighter and Elder still has something to prove. It should be interesting to see how he does on the Contender.

That’s about it for this week people, but if you didn’t see your comment in this week’s, stay tuned because next week will be special. We have the Geno Bambino Question of the Month Prize: An Autographed Copy of “The Great White Hopes” by Graeme Kent. I also want to give a shout out to all of you that have purchased “Evil Awakening,” my first movie on DVD, and ask for the RSR readers out there with some money to burn, go to www.xposse.com and put down ten dollars and pick up a great horror film. I promise you that you will not regret this purchase. So, I will see you next week my friends and I will see you next week with a gift in hand and some big mailbags for your pleasure.
