Last night at the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas, Abner Mares and Anselmo ?Chemito? Moreno both produced commanding victories to move ahead in their championship careers in a Showtime doubleheader.
Moreno outclassed former title challenger David De La Mora, dropping him in rounds two and six before seeing the stout Mexican remain on his stool after the eighth round. After the fight Moreno called for a clash with junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire later this year.
In the evening?s main event, Mares got off to a fast start against Puerto Rico?s Morel, once a titleholder in the flyweight class, and a stoppage victory seemed within reach. Morel would show grit and hang out to last the distance but Mares was in control for all twelve rounds, capturing a clear unanimous decision.
Mares gained his second belt last night, the vacant WBC junior featherweight title, and the 26-year old will be in line for some big fights in the near future.
