Boxingsocialist had a chance to catch up with Nonito Donaire and asked him about the Mares vs Morel fight as well has his upcoming fight. Nonito last fought two months ago when he moved up in weight to fight Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. It was his first fight at super bantamweight and he won the WBO Title. Vasquez was down in the 9th round but Nonito had to settle for the UD. Now Nonito is set to defend his title either on July 14th or July 21 in the somewhat new Dallas Stadium. So far Cristian Mijares is being thrown around as the opponent but nothing is finalized yet.
We asked Nonito who he thought would win tonight, “Mares would win by UD”. Although Mares has been calling out Nonito for a little while now, Nonito still believes that Mares would win. Nonito has no problem facing him, but both camps let it be known that the money has to be right. Right now they are both fighting other opponents. Maybe a little bit later down the road, but if it does happen Mares needs to move up to super bantamweight. Nonito now feels comfortable at 122lbs now. This is where he plans to stay at for a little bit and clean out the division.
Next question was about his own training camp and when will he get started. He let us know that he just started running last week and getting in shape. Right now he said he is walking around at 133lbs. He says he needs to maintain the high weight and not lose it too fast. This is great for Nonito to only weigh 133lbs. With 3 months left until the fight he only has to drop 11 lbs. Nonito does not have to worry about what other fighters worry about and that’s a “weight draining” camp. This move up in weight has really benefited him. Don’t forget to come out and support Nonito Donaire as he defends his WBO Super Bantamweight Title on July 14th or July 21st.
