Tomorrow night on Showtime Championship Boxing, ex-bantamweight champion Abner Mares faces ex-flyweight title holder Eric Morel in a 122-pound bout from El Paso, Texas.At Friday’s weigh-in, Mares weighed 119 1/2 pounds and Morel at 120. Also on the Showtime telecast, WBA 118-pound super champion, Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno will defend his title against David de la Mora in the opening bout on the telecast. Moreno and de la Mora each tipped the scale at 117 1/2 pounds. Here are Boxingtalk’s predictions for the main event:
Stephen “Breadman” Edwards: Mares Mares Mares
John McCormick: Abner Mares by stoppage.
Greg Leon: Mares by stoppage in a fight that belongs not on Showtime.
Scott Shaffer: Eric Morel was a good flyweight before he want to prision, but at 122, “Little Hands of Stone” is too little for Abner Mares, a top 118-pounder moving up. Mares by decision, 118-110.
Doveed Linder: Abner Mares will win a decision over Eric Morel because he is a young, hungry fighter who is at the top of his game. It’s a classic case of in with the new, out with the old. Morel is a good fighter, but it’s Mares’ time.
Rob Soucy: Mares is one of the most underrated fighters in the world, at least amongst the lower weight classes. He is extremely talented with a chance to be a big time star. Despite an eleven-fight win streak, Morel has never faced anyone as talented as Mares. Look for Mares to be too slick as he outboxes the older and slower Morel on his way to a unanimous decision win.
