Beristain says Manny Pacquiao knows that he lost the third fight with Marquez

If ever there was a man who has studied Manny Pacquiao from top to bottom, it very well may be respected Mexican trainer Nacho Beristain.

Between May of 2004 and November of last year, Beristain led his prized pupil Juan Manuel Marquez into battle with Pacquiao on three separate occasions, with all of the contests being extremely competitive. And despite an overall 0-2-1 tally against Pacquiao, there are those who feel Marquez is well within reason for his belief that he won every bout.

The third fight in the trilogy between Pacquiao and Marquez especially drew dismay from those in the Mexico City fighter?s corner, as Juan Manuel, a heavy underdog heading into the fight, boxed beautifully over the first half of the fight and landed enough effective punches to sway the majority of the press in attendance in his favor after twelve rounds.

Pacquiao would emerge with a majority-decision after scores of 116-112, 115-113, and 114-114 were read and Beristain still seems a bit baffled when coping with the reality that his man was never officially awarded the decision in any of the three fights. Advertisement

?I think that nowadays we lack some kind of authority which would prevent what happened to Juan Manuel Marquez in all three fights with Pacquiao,? Beristain stated earlier this month in an interview with Ben Jacobs of FightingFitMagazine.com. ?Pacquiao is a guy that generates a lot of money in all sorts of ways – ticket sales, pay-per-views, sponsorship; all this generates millions of dollars. Maybe that?s why the judges ?make mistakes?. I think it?s just about all their self-interests, and it?s unfair.?

Usually a man with a low-key demeanor, Beristain was obviously a bit fired up by this particular discussion and claimed that Pacquiao himself knows deep down what really happened inside of the ring.

?Everybody knows that Pacquiao lost that third fight, including Pacquiao himself and the President of the Philippines,? stated Beristain. ?Manny Pacquiao is a talented and courageous fighter. He doesn?t fear anyone, he works and trains like a professional but perhaps his promoters are trying to get him to recover from his last fight and they feel that now is not the time for a 4th fight with Marquez.?

Pacquiao is next slated for June 9th defense of his WBO welterweight crown against junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Beristain hasn?t been shy towards criticizing Bradley, who he feels is a dirty fighter, and ultimately sees him coming up short against Pacquiao.

?I think Bradley will make things difficult for him; he?s a very dirty fighter and he?s constantly leading with his head, but I think that Pacquiao will get the better of him,? said Beristain.
