Boxingsocialist had a chance to catch up with Floyd Mayweather’s other uncle Jeff Mayweather. While Jeff stays busy at the gym he gave us some updates on his fighters as well as his thoughts on Brandon Rios, Gamboa, Floyd Mayweather Sr and Floyd Jr. meeting back together. Also he talked to us about a surprise boxing veteran he might be working with. Check out the interview below.
BoxingSocialist- What did you think about the 24/7 Show the other day? Jeff – I thought it was entertaining as it always is once Floyd gets on there, glad to see them air the mending and embracing of Father and son.
BS- Floyd looks like he is ready to fight tomorrow. Do you think he’s peaking too soon? JM- Well if anyone knows their body it should be Floyd, he has practically been doing this his entire life. He looked good even during the first week so it’s just Floyd being Floyd.
BS- Although it was awkward seeing Floyd Sr and Jr “kinda” greet each other, how did you take it? JM- I was glad to see someone take the first step in the healing process and put forth the effort to make amends, most importantly it was aired for the entire boxing world to see and also Floyd Sr showed his maturity as well with not being combative or taking the spotlight and shining it on himself. He said that he has to do his own thing and allow his son to do his, A sign of finally letting go of his son and passing the torch to his brother Roger.
BS- Who are you training at the Mayweather gym? JM- I have quite a few fighters Celestino will be arriving in Vegas on Wednesday. I’m currently training Chase Corbin 6-0 5 kos, Nate Vasquez 3-0, Derrick Smoke Gainer Former World Champion, DeAndre Latimore, my amateurs, Kevin Newman very talented kid, Zach Cooper, Lawayne Hardiman soon to be fighting his pro debut, and a couple M.M.A fighters TJ Dillonshaw and Danny Castillo both from Team Fabber.
BS- What is your take on Gamboa? Is he a very hard worker and what can we expect from him at 135lbs? JM- To be honest I can’t really speak on Gamboa, by the time he’s training I’m already gone to train Roy Nelson “Big Country” of M.M.A fame as well. I heard that he has been doing great but it’s unfair for me to speak on him when I really haven’t seen him do anything but walk around the gym because he trains right when I leave.
BS- After watching last nights fight, could Gamboa have beaten Brandon Rios? JM- Well at 135 lbs I said Gamboa would probably beat him because he can no longer make the weight and down the stretch it would cost him in a fight with Gamboa. He’s small but packs a pretty good punch and has extremely fast hands but his achles heel is he doesn’t have the greatest chin and has been down by far less talented fighters than Rios but I think the weight would have been a huge factor if they had fought.
BS- Whose some of the “new” talent you are working with? JM- Well I won’t really say new but New for me Derrick Gainer, and DeAndre Latimore is still pretty new. This will be only my second fight with him and the M.M.A guys I’m training is a no longer new for me because I have trained King Mo for a little while now. Danny Castillo and TJ Dillonshaw and even Big Country are new additions to my Team.
BS- Thanks for the interview, what would you like to say to your fans in closing? JM- Well I would like to say anyone that has taken the time to read this article, if you have time take a look at my two new sites http://www.proboxinginsider.com and http://www.prommainsider.com there fan freindly and have a asked question forum from some of your favorite fighters and some you may never even heard of but if your curious to find out leave them a question and they will get back to you asap….
