Fighters who just can’t seem to decide when to hang the gloves up is a scenario seen over and over again in boxing. Once upon a time they were a young champion with unlimited potential. Now they are high end gatekeepers hungry to show the world why they should still be relevant. Shane Mosley is in this position at this moment in time. On May 5th we shall see Mosley still has what it takes when he steps into the ring with undefeated WBC super welterweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
For his part, Mosley doesn’t believe his age should be much of a factor in the fight and views this fight as a chance to land another big fight. “It?s about pride. All of the victories were in the past. This is a young champion I?m fighting. He has a belt that I want. We both have our ideas of what we want to do. I want to win the fight and go on to bigger and better thing. I see myself not as an old warrior but a young killer. I don?t buy into the 40-year-old thing” Mosley claimed on a media conference call held earlier this week.
There is no doubt that Canelo, who we last saw destroy Kermit Cintron is facing the toughest test of his young career. Despite Mosley’s lackluster effort in fights against Floyd Mayweather, Sergio Mora, and Manny Pacquiao, Mosley is still a arduous task for any up and coming fighter to deal with. Canelo plans to go on to have bigger paydays against better fighters, and he realizes how truly important this fight is.
“Many people say i?m the favorite but I can?t underestimate a fighter like him. I?m going to be very weary and smart in the fight. I?m looking forward to fighting the best Shane Mosley has to offer. My mentality is to go in there, perform and win but not look for the knockout. When you go for that other obstacles come up and you may not get what you want” claimed Canelo.
Although Canelo may be the favorite to beat Mosley, this is a tough fight to predict a winner due to Canelo’s inexperience. One thing that is clear is that Alvarez appears to be the last stop on the bus for Mosley. A win would make him a champion in a very talent dense division and open the door to other huge opportunities. On the other hand, a loss would solidify Shane Mosley’s new spot as a gatekeeper in the welterweight and junior middleweight division.
