MANILA, Philippines ? Floyd Mayweather continues to look forward to that day when he shares the ring with the fighter many believe is on equal footing with him.
Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer told an on-line radio station in England recently that Mayweather ?clearly wants the fight and wants to make it happen.?
Efforts have been made to make the fight that is expected to gross at least $100 million but the two camps could not agree on revenue sharing even though another major stumbling block had been cleared: Olympic-style blood testing.
Schaefer, who is Oscar De La Hoya?s right-hand man said: ?You know, what they say, never say never. So I am not going to say it?s never going to happen. I actually think, eventually it?s going to happen. It?s going to happen when Pacquiao is towards the end of his career.?
Schaefer said GBP and Top Rank have done some big fights together and for the Mayweather-Pacquiao to happen, Bob Arum has to be on board.
?It takes two to tango and he (Mayweather) can?t do it alone. I (still) hope we can pull it off. We can get the fight done,? said Schaefer.
But Mayweather and Pacquiao have to hurdle their upcoming assignments.
Mayweather faces Miguel Cotto on May 5, while Pacquiao meets Tim Bradley on June 9.
After these fights, Mayweather and Pacquiao will take on separate rivals again and should they win, the clamour will again reach boiling point in 2013.
This is when Schaefer believes the fight will finally take place.
