Newly-crowned WBO female super bantamweight champion Yesica Marcos stopped by Argentina radio show UNO Medios recently to talk about her victory against Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton in San Martin, Mendoza, Argentina, her hometown, two weeks ago.
The undefeated 26-year-old champ expressed her appreciation in finally fighting a true World Champ in Julaton, whom she described as the best she’s ever faced. She also gave credit to her corner Martin Diaz for putting forth an excellent technical gameplan in beating Julaton, which allowed her to be calm in the ring despite getting dropped in the second round. Marcos considers her win over Julaton as the most important fight of her career thus far.
Julaton, on the other hand, was equally complimentary of Marcos, but wishes to get a rematch in a more neutral location.
“Yesica is a great fighter, and she’ll represent her country and women’s boxing well as a champion, but I definitely want a rematch at a more neutral location. I was the champion, and I gave her a title shot in her own country, so why not do a rematch in the US or even in the Philippines,” Julaton told me when I recently spoke to her.
The fight further cast a shadow on the way boxing is being promoted in Argentina, as several other writers like The Ring’s David Avila questioned the officiating and manner in which Julaton was forced and treated in the country for her title defense.
“Marcos won the fight by decision and fought well. But basically Julaton was handicapped by not being able to attack Marcos body. Every time she did she was given a warning and in one instance the referee Ramirez deducted a point from Julaton. It was definitely, in my opinion, hometown cooking. Maybe Ramirez was intimidated by the large Argentine crowd?
It also was poor refereeing from the start.
Anytime a referee gives an advantage to a fighter he?s doing a bad job.”

From last minute switching of judges, to how Julaton was blind-sided with last minute changes at the venue, all the way to the ridiculously one-sided scoring, the 3-time World Champ definitely deserved better. As a long-tenured WBO champ, a rematch is only fair.
