One of boxing?s greatest ambassador?s Bert Sugar, the iconic writer and historian has passed away at age 74 after a battle with lung cancer. Having a cigar in hand and mouth was one of Bert Sugar?s trademarks along with the classic old school hats like a boxing writer straight out of the 1950?s. Bert Sugar has written over 80 books and was also editor of the Ring magazine. Bert also appeared on many television shows and boxing documentaries throughout his storied career, one of those television shows was an appearance with Boxingtalk?s Greg Leon on ESPN to discuss Tarver-Jones II. I happened to have the pleasure of meeting Bert Sugar the same day I met Greg Leon, outside MSG for a smoking break. Bert Sugar was surrounded by his family at the Northern Westchester Medical Center in Mount Kisco. Our thoughts and prayers with Bert?s family and friends at this difficult time. Inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006, Bert was one of the greatest figures in the history of the sport and he will be missed.
