Rodel Mayol does not need to do Hernan “Tyson” Marquez any favors for being unprofessional. Stripped off his WBA flyweight crown for his inability to make the contracted 112 limit, Marquez has nobody else to blame but himself.
“As it stands at this moment, I’m not going to jeopardize [my fighter]. With the contract, the fight is at 112-pounds for the title. Mayol made that weight and he worked very hard. As it stands at this moment, I am not going to proceed with the fight. We’ve been in Mexico six times. I have a lot of respect for the Mexican commission. We’ve never had a problem before and never complained before. But this city, the commission here, I have no respect for,” Mayol’s manager Michael Koncz was quoted by BoxingScene.com’s Rick Reeno, who broke the news regarding the drama that unfolded in today’s weigh-ins in Mexico.
As much as Koncz gets heat for some of his moves and lapses regarding MP Promotions, he did the right thing here in protecting Mayol, who did his due diligence to come in at the proper weight for what would have been a Herculean task of dethroning Marquez in his own backyard.
Our fighters are at a disadvantage each time as it is when they travel to enemy territory for title fights. Their handlers owe to them to at least ensure their safety by not allowing such disadvantages as Koncz is doing for this fight.
This opens up the possibility of Mayol fighting for a vacant title against one of the top contenders in the division at a more neutral location as well. If I may share my two cents, why not a title fight between Mayol, and top contender Milan Melindo in Cebu for a rare title fight in the Philippines between two top Filipino boxers.
