Super star boxer Floyd Mayweather has been well publicized for creative ways of using Social media to promote his sports persona and his fights. One of such media outlets, Twitter registers over two and a half million followers for the undefeated American fighter. Imagine if all his followers subscribed to his next PPV fight on May 5th against Miguel Cotto, it would become a record breaking event and the biggest grossing fight in boxing history. But having such a huge platform at you fingertips is a double edged sword. Such was the case last month when innocent comment (according to Mayweather), a personal opinion about basketball star from New York, Jeremy Linn, backfired and spread through media outlets and internet like wild fire. Floyd twitted that the only reason media went crazy about Jeremy Linn was because he was Asian. Press labeled Mayweather a racist.
?Every body is entitled to their own opinion,? said Mayweather when questioned about it in Los Angeles after the press conference promoting his fight with Miguel Cotto:? I have an open mind. I am not the type to judge; because when it?s all said and done only god can judge you.? Undefeated in forty two fights Mayweather went on to say that he employs people of all races and his comments were blown out of proportions. When asked if he regrets making a comment, Floyd said:? anything I did in life I don?t regret it, but I am not here to talk about Jeremy Linn. I am here to talk about Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather because that?s what this fight is about. I am not fighting Jeremy Linn, so I am not trying to talk about Jeremy Linn. Thirty five years old Mayweather is seven to one favorite to beat Cotto according to Las Vegas book makers. However Floyd has been displaying an unusual amount of respect for his opponent during press tour.
?I respect every fighter that Floyd Mayweather has faced,? said Mayweather (42-0,26KO):? Some opponents that I face get a little wild. If my opponent gets wild and gets a little crazy on a press tour than I get a little wild and a little crazy on a press tour, but if my opponent is smooth and everything goes smooth than it?s easy sailing.?
Miguel Cotto is smooth. He has had enough of wild press conferences last time out when he was facing Antonio Margarito. Cotto exacted his revenge last December in New York and now seems poised to face Floyd.
?I am a little different type of fighter than Antonio Margarito,? said Mayweather:? I think I am a lot faster. I think my defense is a lot better and we both have faced Shane Mosley. When he faced Shane Mosley, they were saying the fight could have gone either way. They said the fight was leaning towards his way because it was fought in Madison Square Garden where he has crazy unbelievable fan base.? Floyd only had one rocky moment in a fight with Sugar Shane Mosley. Veteran from Pomona landed a right hand in the second stanza that had Floyd?s legs wobble. That was the only exciting moment of the fight, because Mayweather dominated the action from that point on.
?I am just thankful that I am where I am at today in this sport,? said Mayweather who will be challenging Miguel Cotto for WBA super welterweight title on May 5th at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas:? I always dreamed that I?ll be here some day and has been here for so long and I am just happy.?
The fight will be televised live by HBO Pay Per View.
