Sunny Thursday morning at Dave?s Barbershop was glorious. Downtown Ronnie Brown was singing the blues. Al the Barber was getting a close shave from Dave.
?Now that we know for certain that hell will freeze over before Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather ever fight each other, the only thing we got left is to compare their popularity,? said Dave the Barber upon my arrival: ?We got Floyd fighting in May at the MGM and we got Manny fighting in June at the MGM. What do you say? Which fight would you buy if you had to choose??
?It?s easy. I am going to watch them both since you are buying the Pay Per View both times,? said Al the Barber wiping shaving cream off his lower lip:? But if I had to choose, it is just as easy; I would choose Manny every time. Yes, sure Floyd is a great defensive fighter, emphasis on defensive, master of his craft, still he is boring. I would like to see violence in the ring and a lot of action and that is Manny Pacquiao. That boy inspires me and fills my heart with passion every time he enters the ring. It will be a long time before you ever see a guy like that again. He is all fire and that is why he amassed a cult like following. Manny is their God in Philippines. That boy will become a president of that country one day.? Advertisement
?I am a great fan of Pacquiao myself,? exclaimed Downtown Ronnie Brown:? But I prefer Mr. Money Mayweather and his artistry of defense. He is a true master of sweet science- hit and don?t get hit. He doesn?t make a wasted move in the ring and the moves he makes; that boy is like a cobra, coiled to spring to action any time, yet poised and confident. He is breathtaking to watch. But if we are comparing popularity or PPV buys, Floyd beats Manny every time. Floyd?s fight with Mosley has done more in pay per view buys than any Pacquiao fight. And Floyd still holds the record numbers for PPV with Oscar in 2007.?
?Yes, Floyd likes to brag about that record of 2.4 million PPV buys with Oscar de La Hoya,? cut in Big Steve:? I don?t know how many Floyd?s fans bought that fight, but I was there ringside. And let me tell you something, there were no Mayweather fans in the arena that night. None! I was afraid to say that I thought Floyd won the fight. I didn?t want to get into a scrap with some zealous Oscar fan in Las Vegas.?
?As always Ronnie, you are comparing apples to pears,? cried out Dave the Barber:? Like my good friend George Carlin would say ?Here is an announcement from the institute of apples- F…ck pears.? First of all Manny?s fight with Marquez has done better in PPV that Mayweather Mosley and second of all Pacquiao will have to carry the whole show in June, since Bradley could not sell a ticket in Palm Springs and Mayweather will get a lot of help from his friends on May 5th. Miguel Cotto is a pay per view star on his own, good for at least half of million buys and then you get Canelo and Mosley, a fight that could sell PPV on its own. It would not be a fair comparison, but I still think Manny will give Floyd and three other Ring Kings a run for their money. What do you think??
