Nothing official from the WBA yet, but Amir Khan claims he has been reinstated in place of Lamont Peterson as WBA super lightweight ?super? champion.
Khan tweeted: ?Great news WBA still have me as WBA Super Champion! I will be putting that title on the line on May 19th against Peterson.?
And on his web page he wrote:
?I?ve just been relaxing and doing other work away from the ring since my fight last December with Lamont Peterson. As you all know the rematch has been agreed but something you might not know is that I will be going into the ring as the WBA ?Super? Champion. I?m really looking forward to putting my WBA ?super? title on the line against Peterson, who will enter the ring as the IBF world champion.?
Peterson vs. Khan II, originally announced by Golden Boy Promotions on February 10th as a clash for Peterson?s WBA world super championship and IBF world championship, is set for May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
Peterson won a controversial split decision over Khan last December in his hometown of Washington DC. Khan?s promoter filed a protest with the WBA and IBF, but withdrew the IBF protest shortly before the IBF hearing.
At the time this report was filed, Peterson is still listed as WBA champion on the WBA website.
