Sixteen years as a professional and Floyd Mayweather Jr. still loves soaking up the spotlight. The undefeated star was in Hollywood, California today as he met with fans and the press promoting his May 5th fight with Miguel Cotto. Mayweather vs. Cotto takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in possibly the year?s biggest fight.
Inside of Grauman?s Chinese Theatre, Mayweather didn?t drop any sound bites that were derogatory or out of line, but he instead started off by thanking those closest to him for helping him push forward in his boxing journey.
?I?m truly blessed to be where I?m at today in my career,? Mayweather said at the press conference. ?I?ve faced a lot of great champions and I?ve had great fights. Golden Boy Promotions has done a hell of job with their fighters. Al Haymon, Leonard Ellerbe, and everybody that?s behind this, has done a hell of a job with my career.?
In the past Mayweather has had a frosty relationship with the press, labeling some members of the media as haters and feeling that certain people fail to recognize his accomplishments. However today he changed his tune and extended a sign of appreciation for everyone who has kept his name in the headlines over the years.
?The media today, the technology, and the outlet, has been amazing, and I want to thank you guys for, if it was a good story or a bad story, thanks for writing about Floyd Mayweather and keeping me relevant for sixteen years in the sport of boxing,? said Mayweather.
Cotto has a 37-2 record and has scored 29 knockouts, certainly somebody Mayweather would never want to look past. And that?s exactly how he is looking at his latest test.
?Miguel Cotto is one solid, tough cookie,? Mayweather said. ?And I know that going out there May 5th, this is a guy I know I can?t overlook. We?re going to go out there and give the fans what they want to see. Blood, sweat, and tears.?
