We all love a parade but not a charade. And what Floyd Mayweather Jr. is conducting is a propaganda charade. Now, for the first time ever, I am firmly convinced that “Money” has no intentions of ever fighting Manny Pacquiao. No. no, no and never. Not because Mayweather doesn’t view the match as a glorified exhibition, a sparring session which he easily win. But because the control freak that lives inside Mayweather will not permit him to make a fair economic split with Pacman. Floyd and Manny are boxing’s two super powers but Mayweather’s ego will not permit him to ackowledge that by splitting revenue 50-50. Floyd won’t even split Fifty Cent 50-50, he wants his shadow companion all to himself. I digress, I know, but why else would a guy who is going to jail after his May 5 fight with Miguel Cotto insult an upstanding citizen such as Pacquiao with this comment from Wednesday’s Apollo Theater in Harlem press conference” “Just by speaking to Pacquiao on the phone, I mean, he’s not one of the sharpest knives in the drawer,” Mayweather said. “He faces Floyd Mayweather, he’s not getting 50-50. Not at all. No one is getting 50-50.” After that dubious comment, Mayweather went on to his tiresome feud with and hatred of his ex-promoter, Bob Arum. “Bob Arum likes to match Top Rank fighters with Top Rank fights. He keeps all the money in house,” Mayweather said. “If I offered him $30 million, he should be happy,” Mayweather said. “If I offered him $30 million and I didn’t give money on the back end, why should I? He’s with Arum right now, and they’re having problems. It’s obvious he must not be getting money on the back end.” Mayweather is not entirely wrong on Arum’s in house habit but he is doing what the shrinks call “projecting” because he’s running the same game. Mayweather, Golden Boy, and yes, Arum also, do whatever is best for themselves in any given promotional situation. Unless there’s some sudden, unforeseeable thaw between Floyd and his Estranged Uncle Bob, then the fistic handwriting is on the wall. Mayweather beats the always courageous Cotto. Mayweather does his stint in the Las Vegas slammer. Mayweather reappears for a November fight against Mexico’s wunderkind Canelo Alvarez who will have used washed up Sugar Shane Mosley for target practice on the Mayweather-Cotto undercard. Don’t be fooled, it won’t be as humungous as Mayweather-Pacquiao but Floyd beating up Carrot Top will be a very lucrative enterprise. In House Bob, well it’s stale but accurate criticism of how Arum operates. But is In House Floyd any better, any different? Mayweather can malign Pacquiao personally all he wants.
