?Speed kills in any sport? ? Devon Alexander dominates Marcos Maidana

Moments ago at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, hometown favorite and former junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander put forth his best boxing display in years, soundly outpointing WBA junior welterweight king Marcos Maidana over ten rounds.

Alexander was coming off of a 2011 that saw him lose a technical decision to Timothy Bradley in January and then struggle in pulling out a split-decision over Lucas Matthysse in June over the course of ten rounds after getting dropped in the fourth round.

Alexander?s reputation had taken a hit but on this night he boxed a very sound and complete fight, keeping Maidana on his heels with sharp counterpunches and hurting his Argentinean foe on repeated occasions. After ten rounds, scores of 100-90 twice and 99-91 were read in Alexander?s favor as he moves his record to 23-1 with 13 knockouts while eyeing bigger bounty in his first fight in the welterweight division.

Speaking to HBO?s Max Kellerman after the fight, Alexander revealed why he was so confident heading in. Advertisement

?Speed kills in any sport,? stated Alexander. ?I know what I?m capable of doing. I can become one of the best in the world.?

Alexander seemed unsure on his future but did note that he would fight anyone available.

As for Maidana, the gritty champion will likely head back to 140 pounds, where he is still a player given his relentless style and stout punching power.
