GOLDEN Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez said they were very sad that World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion and the Philippines’ emerging ring sensation Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista couldn’t fight veteran Alejandro Felix Montiel on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios main event Sunday because they were “expecting a great performance” from their ward.
Bautista was forced to pull out of the Montiel fight after he had to be hospitalized with a virus infection that caused high fever and weakened him considerably.
Gomez, who rushed to the airport immediately after the main event Sunday to catch a return flight to Los Angeles, said: “This happens in boxing and we are in no rush with Bautista. He is a young kid still.”
He said Golden Boy Promotions, headed by the great Oscar de la Hoya, was “eventually looking for a world title fight, but he is a young kid [19] and we are not in a hurry.” Ronnie Nathanielsz
