QUEZON City?Cebu-based boxers, former world champion Gerry Pe?alosa, Czar Amonsot, Jimrex Jaca and Michael Domingo each pulled wins against their Mexican opponents in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Larios fight yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The most sensational was ALA gym?s Domingo, the Philippine Bantamweight champion and last minute replacement for ALA Boy Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista. Domingo scored a seventh round TKO win over Mexican Felix Alejandro Montiel, the lone stoppage of the card.
Montiel found it hard to fight the determined replacement.
?I just took it as a big challenge. I felt that I could win by knockout so I delivered my best and when he went down on the first round I knew the fight will be stopped sooner or later,? the 26-year-old fighter said.
Flurry
An uppercut-straight combination sent Montiel to the canvass on the first round. A flurry of punches to the head followed before the referee came to the Mexican?s rescue.
Not to be outdone, ALA Boy and the WBO Asia Pacific Super-featherweight champion Czar Amonsot also scored a unanimous decision victory over Silverio Ortiz after their 10-round duel.
Amonsot, like Domingo, was also a replacement fighter. He subbed for Randy Suico, who is scheduled to fight for the WBA Lightweight title against Juan Diaz on July 15 in Las Vegas.
Combination
A native from Tagbilaran City, Amonsot dominated the fight from start to finish, with a two-punch combination that kept Ortiz at bay.
?It really feels great to win. For us Cebu-based fighters to earn appreciation and applause in a big card headlined by a big fighter,? Amonsot said.
The Mexican, for his part, showed passable footwork.
After 10 rounds, the scores stood at 100-91; 99-91 and 98-92, all for Amonsot.
Rusty
Pe?alosa, on the other hand, was a bit rusty but he still displayed the defense and moves that made him a world champion in 1997.
He got hurt several times, courtesy of the lanky but deceptively tough Mexican, Tomas Rojas.
Pe?alosa still won by unanimous decision 98-93; 98-92 and 97-93.
Jaca, a Sibulan, Negros Oriental native from the Rex ?Wakee? Salud Stable, won over Hector Javier Marquez by technical decision after 2:08 of boxing in of the seventh round.
The wily and cunning Marquez inflicted a deep cut on Jaca?s left eye, forcing the ringside physician to advise the stoppage of the fight.
The three judges had Jaca ahead 60-53, declaring him the winner by technical decision. (RCM)
