Coliseum de Puerto Rico will be the site where press tour announcing a major super welterweight championship showdown between Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather. The fight is to take place on May 5th at the Mecca of Boxing, MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Multi city press tour will begin on Monday, February 27th at 2:00 pm in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It will move to famed Apollo Theater in New York on Tuesday, February 28th and then end at Grauman’s Chineese Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday, March 1st,2012 at 1:00pm.
May 5th championship contest for Cotto’s WBA super welterweight title will be broadcasted live by HBO PPV. Many pundits believe that this fight will take place four years too late and that Miguel Cotto is not the same fighter he was when the talks about this match up first began. Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya has a different opinion.
” Cotto has a very unique and interesting style to give Mayweather some fits,” stated De La Hoya via twitter yesterday:” Cotto is patient and calculated with his punches and this new trainer he has will get him in great shape.”
Oscar De La Hoya has earned the right for an opinion about Money Mayweather after their 2007 showdown, the richest fight in history of boxing up to date which ended in a split decision victory for Mayweather. De La Hoya is one of the very few fighters who gave Floyd trouble. Seemingly ahead on the score cards after eight rounds, Oscar gassed out and abandoned a stiff jab that was making a difference in the fight. Mayweather found a way to win but it was a close call. Oscar had a real chance of winning the contest ;if only he could keep it up with his jab.
May be five years later promoter Oscar De La Hoya noticed a jab of Puerto Rican star, Miguel Cotto. It is a real weapon; stiff, accurate, scull jarring. Cotto knocked down Joshua Clottey with the jab and beat Shane Mosley largely due to his stiff jab that made Shane’s back stiffen up during the fight.
Miguel Cotto demonstrated his potent weapon once again last December in New York when he exacted a sweet revenge on a bitter rival Antonio Margarito. But as my friend Big Steve would say – you?ve got to get up pretty early in the morning to beat Floyd Mayweather. A jab, no matter how stiff or educated, simply won?t do it.
Floyd Mayweather is seven to one favorite to beat Cotto on May 5th according to Las Vegas bookmakers. In other words, Cotto is perceived as having just slightly better chance than Victor Ortiz.
Does Miguel Cotto have what it takes to upset the odds? Did he leave a big part of him in the ring after two brutal beatings at the hands of Antonio Margarito and then Manny Pacquiao or was he able to reinvent himself into a new and complete fighter who can compete with boxing?s best Floyd Mayweather?
