Last night in Corpus Christi, Texas, former two-time champion Paul ?The Punisher? Williams scored a much-need victory over Nobuhiro Ishida. Williams was desperate for a definite win following his controversial majority decision over Cuban Erislandy Lara this past July and was able to pull in scorecards of 120-108 across the board against his Japanese foe.
Ishida created a stir this past April when he upset James Kirkland with a first round TKO after dropping him three times at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas but he seemed to have no answer for Williams? superior reach and work rate. Williams sees his record rise to 41-2 with 27 knockouts and is still a player at 154 pounds despite never fully bouncing back from his shocking November 2010 knockout loss to Sergio Martinez.
On the undercard, yet another horrible robbery took place as IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud won a highly-controversial split-decision over former champion Gabriel Campillo.
Cloud scored a pair of knockdowns against the Spaniard in the opening frame but was thoroughly out boxed in the remaining eleven rounds afterwards. Scores of 116-110 and 114-112 for Cloud and 115-111 for Campillo were read in yet another baffling decision.
Campillo was also jobbed of a rightfully-earned decision over Beibut Shumenov in January of 2010 and it?s just a shame to see a victory taken from him yet again.
