Moments ago in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, rivals Jorge ?Travieso? Arce and Lorenzo Parra weighed in ahead of their anticipated rematch tomorrow night. Arce won the vacant WBO bantamweight title from Angky Angkota last November but came in just under the junior featherweight limit of 122 pounds today while Parra was spot on at 123 pounds.
The two fighters fought to a split-draw in September of 2010 that has left Parra fuming to this day. Giving his take on that particular injustice, the proud Venezuelan insists he will leave no doubt the second time around.
?When we fought, I gave him a boxing lesson and landed my punches and took no punishment, but yet we were robbed and given a draw,? stated Parra in a BoxingScene.com piece by Rafael Soto. ?But now the judges won?t rob me because I will beat him so clearly they won?t be able to take the win. Arce in near retirement and I?ll push him in that direction on Saturday.?
Arce is coming off of a career-reviving 2011 campaign that saw him upset Puerto Rico?s Wilfredo Vazquez in May while capturing victories over Simphiwe Nongqayi and Angkota. The brazen Los Mochis star was speculated as an impeding opponent for Nonito Donaire, who defeated Vazquez earlier this month himself, but now it appears those plans have changed.
Speaking to Ronnie Nathanielsz yesterday, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who promotes Donaire and works closely with Arce, mentioned that ?Travieso? likely wouldn?t be ready until September and mentioned WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka as a likely replacement for Nonito.
If Donaire is to face Nishioka in June and come away victorious, no easy task at all, then Arce likely could be waiting in the wings come September.
But first things first. An agitated and determined Lorenzo Parra awaits.
