On May 5th Floyd Mayweather will move up to junior middleweight to fight Miguel Cotto. The undercard is starting to shape up with Saul Canelo Alvarez facing Shane Mosley. Another fight that maybe is in the works is Peter ?Kid Chocolate? Quillin to face Winky Wright. From a fans perspective the matchups sound like a very good card being made by Golden Boy promotions, but consider that Mosley has not won a fight in 3 years and has looked terrible. His last good fight was against Antonio Margarito and has since then looked like a shot version of himself. This is a card that Golden Boy is working hard at to make Alvarez a bigger star. Golden Boy Promotions is just like Top Rank and all the other promotions; because at the end of the day they don?t care about the fighters it?s all about maximizing the dollar. I?m curious how they are going to spin how Mosley is still a threat and how he hurt Mayweather. Although he did hurt Mayweather he took a beating in that fight, just like he took a beating against Pacquiao. In fact, since 2002 Mosley?s record is 8-7-1 and consider the opponents he beat such as a shot Vargas and his last round stoppage of Mayorga in which he only had a one point advantage over him.
It may seem like I?m hating on Mosley, but on the contrary he is one of my favourite all time fighters in the sport. In his prime his toughness, determination, speed and power made him one of the most exciting fighters to watch. But this version; the one that gets hit a lot and simply fights to survive in the ring, is not the same fighter. On May 5th you may see something you never thought you would see; Shane Mosley getting knocked out. In his prime Canelo would have no shot at beating Mosley, he was simply too strong and fast to contend with. But this version of Mosley has a chance to get seriously hurt all for the price of building up Canelo to be a bigger star.
The other possible fight is Peter Quillin facing Winky Wright, which is another case of Golden Boy taking advantage of a future hall of famer for the sake of building up a fighter?s record. Wright has not fought since 2009 and is on a two fight losing streak. The difference between Wright and Mosley is Wright has looked competitive in his losses, but still Wright is coming off a two year layoff and at age 40 how much does he have left? This is the kind of matchmaking, if you take the time to think about it, makes you sick to see two possible hall of famers being taken advantage of all for the sake of building up young fighters.
