Jan 26, 2012 – A professional boxer usually employs a manager or in this new age of boxing… an ?advisor? that looks out for his or her best interest.
The ?advisor? usually plays the roll of negotiator between the fighter and their promoter in order to maximize the financial gain of their client.
The goal of a promoter is to pay as little as possible to their talent aka ?the fighters? in order to maximize their own earnings.
A good ?advisor? is able to leverage the presence of their talent in a manner that allows them to demand the maximum amount of guaranteed dollars as well as the maximum amount of potential financial upside each time they put their lives on the line.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are both considered the two best fighters in the world.
Both Floyd and Manny have been compared very similarly in terms of popularity and being massive revenue generating machines within the boxing world.
They both draw relatively similar domestic Pay-Per-View figures and they both draw relatively similar live gate figures.
Al Haymon operates as Floyd Mayweather Jr.?s advisor.
Michael Koncz operates as Manny Pacquiao?s advisor.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. would fight Shane Mosley on May 1, 2010 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada. Floyd would be guaranteed a tad over $22 million for his bout.
Manny Pacquiao would fight Shane Mosley on May 7, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada. Manny would be guaranteed $6 million for his bout.
I?m not smart in any sense of the word. I just fail to comprehend as to how two fighters deemed as equals in terms of drawing power fail to demand similar guarantees especially when fighting the same opponent at the same venue.
If I had any sense, I?d give Al Haymon a letter grade of ?A? for negotiating such a high-level guarantee for his client Floyd Mayweather Jr. being that Floyd would receive a minimum of $22 million+ if the event did 50,000 buys or 5 million buys. On the other hand… Michael Koncz would receive a letter grade of ?F-? for negotiating such an undervalued guarantee for his client Manny Pacquiao being that too much financial risk would fall on the shoulders of the ?Pacman? if the event failed to live up to expectations. Remember, these fighters generate similar revenue amounts and in Bob Arum?s own words, Pacquiao even trounces Mayweather?s figures.
The typical response of Koncz, Arum, and every other scumbag stealing from our beloved Manny Pacquiao will state to the tune of… ?we report less in order to avoid paying U.S. taxes or he has a much larger financial upside that is unreported.?
I don?t need to remind those attempting to pull a fast one on the Internal Revenue Service that notorious mobster & murderer Al Capone could not evade these fellas. Death and Taxes… that?s all we?re guaranteed. In addition in these economic times the last thing the United States of America needs is athletes and entertainment outlets failing to pay taxes in this country.
Looking at the basic financials of a Pacquiao or Mayweather event would be projected as follows in a conservative manner:
Live Gate = $7 million Net PPV Revene = 1 million buys x $30 = $30 million Replay Broadcast + International TV + Sponsorships + Memorabilia = $3 million Total Net Income from Floyd/Manny Events = $40 million (ultra conservative)
Riddle me this Michael Marley… out of a fairly conservative pot of $40 million, why is the best fighter in the world, Manny Pacquiao only demanding a $6 million guarantee while his counter-part Floyd Mayweather Jr. demands a $22 million+ guarantee?
Michael Koncz is supposed to look out for Manny Pacquiao?s best interests… not Bob Arum?s.
If I wasn?t as dumb as I am… I?d almost think that Koncz was in cahoots with Arum in order to maximize Arum?s profit rather than Pacquiao?s. It?s unfair and it?s not right to treat the best fighter in the world as such.
It?s no secret that during the time that Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank were both attempting to secure the services of Manny Pacquiao, Canadian lawyer, Michael Koncz approached Freddie Roach for a loan of $25,000. Roach?s advisor would request collateral for the loan which would incense Koncz who would then approach Bob Arum for the loan which he would receive but would in-turn need to secure the Pacquiao deal for Top Rank.
Ever since then, Koncz has been appointed as Manny Pacquiao?s ?advisor?.
What a mess…
The question is now simply.. ?Why??
Why is it important to bring all these factors into play when analyzing the truth behind the Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations?
It is important to understand these factors due to the fact that when Manny Pacquiao requests purse parity with Floyd Mayweather Jr., there is nothing in record and/or verifiable that suggests Pacquiao earns what Mayweather earns. This is a major hold up as to why this fight isn?t happening.
Michael Koncz is a smoke-screen ?negotiator? and is doing everything in his power to stall the fight for his client… Bob Arum.
Reports that Koncz is in ?meetings? and nobody within the boxing media questions as to who exactly he is meeting with and what is he discussing in order to attempt to make this fight?
Riddle me this Michael Marley… Haymon provides 22 and Koncz slides 6
What gives?
PS.
