Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto are out and Saul Canelo Alvarez is in. Here is the reason why. It’s no surprise that Bob Arum does not want to make the May 5th fight with Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Who benefits from the extra $20-$40 Million from the new stadium? Mr Bob Arum of course. You don’t really think that Manny will see any of that money do you? When Bob Arum thought Floyd Mayweather was going to jail on Jan 6th he was throwing around the ideal of Pacquiao fighting May 5th with Marquez. Once he found out that Floyd’s jail time got pushed back to June 1st then Arum had to back track all of those words. He was again backed into a wall with no way out. So without a shadow of a doubt we know that Bob Arum wants to keep it in house. So either he will get Marquez or Bradley to fight Pacquiao next.
Now let’s move on to why Cotto is not going to get the shot at Mayweather. After Miguel Cotto put on a great show by getting revenge against Antonio Margarito he claimed that he was a free agent. This means he has no ties at all to Bob Arum or Top Rank. He has a big enough name to get a title shot without going through a Promoter or a Manager. The only problem is Bob Arum has yet to come out publicly to say Miguel Cotto is a free agent. There are close sources saying that Miguel Cotto has “options” that he has to fulfil to Top Rank. One thing we have learned in the past is you have to use your own lawyers and not the promoters lawyers when your signing contracts. Remember Nonito Donaire? He thought his contract was over too but Bob Arum had some small print that was overlooked. Nonito ended up resigning with Top Rank Promotions. Bob Arum has said himself that Mayweather will not be fighting Cotto. This let’s us know that appearently Arum knows more than Cotto and the public too. He must have Cotto in an Iron Clad contract.
