When Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa slapped Floyd Mayweather Jr. with a 90-day prison sentence, she just might have done the sport of boxing a colossal favor.
Although Mayweather?s stint in the slammer on domestic abuse charges? which is now scheduled to begin June 1st? won?t kill a potential mega-match with pound-for-pound rival Manny Pacquiao, it is the latest in a seemingly never-ending series of obstructions that have prevented the match from taking place. And that, despite all the hyperbole and hysteria to the contrary, is a good thing.
Far too many people assume that just because Mayweather and Pacquiao are the two best fighters in the world, a bout between them would be a surefire sensation. From a strictly business point of view, they are correct. Providing the fight were to take place in the relatively near future, Pacquiao vs. Mayweather could possibly surpass Mayweather?s 2007 blockbuster with De La Hoya as the richest boxing match in history.
