Hello RSR readers and welcome to the Saturday edition of the mailbag. I used to love Saturday morning cartoons, but they seem to be a thing of the past. I will sit there with my son and click through the channels in search of some decent entertainment, but all the good cartoons are non existent. What happened to all of those fat Gummy Bears that used to bounce all over the place? You don’t see Bugs Bunny too much anymore either. I love Looney Tunes, but they don’t show them too often anymore, which is a shame. I can’t find a decent cartoon outside of South Park, but that’s not for kids. That’s for grown ups. Can you call a really fat person a “grown out?” Sorry about that…but it just came to mind.
I appreciate everyone taking time out of their busy weekend to check in on RSR because we understand that Saturday is the day that you usually “get your groove on.” So the fact that you have taken time away from grooving is appreciated and I intend to make sure that you don’t regret that decision! Today is the mixed day people where everything and anything will be answered and there is also the matter of and autographed DVD of the very first X Posse Production: Evil Awakening that I will be giving away. I will mention it at the very end of this segment…so show some patience and don’t immediately scroll down. That takes the fun out of it.
I used to go bowling every Saturday night for eight dollars and I could bowl until 2 in the morning. Oh those were the days! The wife and I went recently and it was 25 smackers each and we could only play until midnight. Now, the really bad part: It was Disco Bowl. No, KC and the Sunshine Band did not come out and shake their moneymakers right in my face as you are probably assuming. Disco Bowl is when they shut off all of the lights and have this crappy neon effect going. Then, they have these lights blaring in your eyes as you try to bowl. Disco Bowl? What is this world coming to? I haven’t bowled since.
Now I’ve talked about boxing and cartoons, so I guess it’s time for some boxing. Let’s see what’s on your noodle (mind).
IDIOTS, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION

I know this is a bit late, but did you watch the Hopkins vs Tarver fight? Well I was just really flabbergasted by the two HBO commentators of that fight when one of them said that if Bernard Hopkins fought the way he was fighting Tarver when he fought Jermain Taylor twice then Hopkins should have won both of the fights against Taylor. Are those two NUTS?!
I mean did they even watch the two Hopkins vs Taylor fights?! I assume they have been around in the world of boxing for quite sometime now and if so, then they should also know that boxers react differently to different type of opponents, and I should say that Taylor won twice because he figured out how to fight B-Hop effectively and on the other hand B-Hop was not able to figure out how to beat Taylor on both fights. I’m sure B-Hop tried to do the same thing as what he did to Tarver when he faced Taylor, it’s just that Taylor was able to, if I may say “avoid” B-Hops strategy when they fought.
IMHO those two commentators are Idiots and shouldn’t be allowed to cover any more boxing events.

Did I see the Hopkins-Tarver fight? No, there was no fight. You had one guy sleepwalking and the other punching and grappling his way to a win. I am so glad that I didn’t rent that garbage. Even the hype that HBO tried to build couldn’t sell it. I guess that it only got 330,000 buys, which is better than the 130,000 or so that the Vitali Klitschko-Danny Williams PPV generated a while ago, or what about Cedric Kushner’s “Fistful of Dollars” PPV? Now, if I’m not mistaking, that generated 4 buys. Maybe I’m wrong, but it was no more than 10! I could see the look on Kushner’s face when he saw the buy rate. It screamed: “I should have made it fistful of twenty-five cents.”
HBO commentators get carried away when they do a broadcast. They had this notion that Antonio Tarver was so good, but he just wasn’t. He was ill-prepared and not really skilled enough to defeat Hopkins to begin with. I didn’t think that Bernard looked spectacular in that bout. He definitely won it, but he was fighting a zombie. Props to him for winning, but it was a horribly boring fight.
I think that it was pretty messed up that they stated that the Hopkins that beat Tarver would have beaten Jermain Taylor. Hopkins wasn’t aggressive against Taylor because he was quick and hit hard. He did not push forward because he was afraid of the return. Against Tarver, all he had for a return was a sad look on his face that said: “Please don’t hit me again Mr. Hopkins.”
I think that the broadcast from start to finish was garbage and HBO should have their PPV license pulled. There just wasn’t any excitement in that fight and there isn’t much excitement in any Tarver or Hopkins fight for that matter. What did people expect? You have 2 guys that are known for putting people to sleep and I’m not talking about knockouts. I’m almost positive now that Tarver didn’t knock RJJ out with his punches. Roy was watching him box and got drowsy and passed out…his insomnia was cured in just 6 minutes. You can’t beat that!
As for the announcers…they have their good times and their bad times and there has just been a lot of bad times as of late where they almost seem to overboard to sell the fight. At least Merchant said: “Wake me up when there’s a fight.” He didn’t candy-coat the obvious. This was a bad fight when it was first thought up. It was a bad fight on paper. It was a bad fight because the two fighters cannot excite the crowds. I even think that Tarver knew that he wasn’t going to win this fight prior to even stepping into the ring. He was spent, but went for the money as many boxers will do…maybe hoping to land that lucky punch.

How are you doing my friend? I don’t think that we will see a fourth encounter between these two unless Morales beats Pacman and Barrera beats Juarez. Then, maybe, they will face each other in a farewell bout, but I make it a long shot. At this moment, I would pick MAB by close UD over Morales. It’s a tough fight and can go either way as usual, but I think that MAB is more versatile and is just a better overall fighter. MAB by UD.

That’s like Cherry Bomb…cool. Don’t worry, you are not my “Jerry Pie” as Warrant might sing. What an underrated group that Warrant was. They sang: Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Sometimes She Cries, and Down Boys. I want to know where the down boys go, if you know what I’m saying. You like Danger Danger too? Yeah they were the bomb too. Okay, is that all you want to know…about Warrant and Danger Danger. You wanted to talk about hair bands, right? Oh, you didn’t. You are overdosing on Pacman questions…hmm. Okay. I do get many questions from the die hard Pacquiao fans and God Bless them for that, but you and others have complained that it gets too repetitive. Well, I have created the Thursday “Pac Sack,” which is an entity of its own and should make everyone happy. There are still some Pac questions in the Saturday bag, but I thought that the Pacman fans deserved their own bag and if you are not interested in Manny, you can just ignore it. AN EVEN WEIGHT

Certainly, the most vital requisite for a fight to push through is during the weigh-in.
My question is: Can a fighter weigh heavier or lighter during fight night after successfully attaining the weight limit? I suppose this is included in the fight plan or strategy since the added and diminished pounds can truly affect the boxer’s power, mobility and stamina.
This exemplifies a “double-edged sword” or in other words, “a give and take relationship” on the other hand.
Sir, I’m quite amused when a DRAW decision happens in a fight. I believe that in every round, someone has got to have the upper hand. Every possible combination must be superior to the other since no two boxers are alike as far as style is concerned.
Do you agree that having a DRAW decision in a certain fight is like unloading the burden of rendering judgment? They should abolish it, it takes away the excitement. He he
A DRAW for me seems akin to a court judge abstaining from his obligation to render judgment, which is a mortal sin in judicial procedures, it implies incapacity. Boxing should no less be different. Lastly, do you have any idea on what are the criteria or credentials that fight promoters (if it’s their duty..) looked upon in selecting judges for a certain fight? It seems the quality of the judges are as important as the fighters themselves.

What is going on my friend? Once a fighter makes that weight limit, they can come in as heavy or as light as they want afterward. James Toney, when he faced RJJ, was in the 168 range for the Super Middleweight Title fight. On the day of the fight, he was well over 180 pounds. Arturo Gatti was doing the same thing and Joey Gamache paid for it. The scales can be abused but it’s tough to regulate. No matter which way you approach this issue, there are pros and cons and you will never make everyone happy.
I am with you on draws, but I do think that they are necessary at times. I remember when that pay per view: “The People’s Choice Heavyweight Championship” or whatever it was called would award the decision to the stylistically better fighter if the cards were even. I don’t agree with that, but I do like the idea of overtime in boxing. If a draw is announced, we go to three rounds of extra action! Wouldn’t you have loved that in Holyfield-Ruiz 3? Never mind…bad example. The Winky-Taylor bout was a good fight and three more rounds would have been great, but it’ll never happen. I’d like to see 15 rounder title fights come back, but they are probably stuck at 12. What can you do?
Draws can be upsetting for sure, but I would rather a draw than a bad decision. For instance, had Lennox Lewis lost the first bout against Evander Holyfield on the cards, I would have given up writing forever, but since it was a draw, I can handle it. No matter how you cut it, boxing isn’t going to be any fairer with the exclusion of draws. There are still corruption and incompetent judges…and there always will be. That’s what you get when you have a subjective sport on your hands. I wouldn’t mind seeing the overtime thing go into effect, but what I would really like to see would be 15 round championship fights again.
I think that the credentials that a judge must have is the ability to write his/her own name at least three times and can count to ten. If you can master those two things, then you are probably qualified to be a judge. In all honesty, there are some good judges, but most of the time when a decision is read, I’m at a loss. I know that scoring a bout is tough and people see different things, and at times, I am in the minority. I actually scored the George Foreman-Axel Schulz bout 117-111 for “Big George.” Those jabs and body shots were what it was all about people. I also scored Trinidad-De La Hoya for Tito: 116-112. So maybe I am being a wee bit too hard on these judges.

There was some agreement for MAB to face Barrios, but plans have changed and Rocky is getting another shot and it’s on PPV! Isn’t that just fantastic! Perhaps Barrios is in the wings, but I don’t see MAB getting beyond Juarez.
1. Let’s face the facts here. When MAB faces guys that can’t punch or are well beyond their prime, he looks like a million bucks, but he is too old and doesn’t have the endurance anymore to go 12 hard rounds. A guy like Barrios would press the matter and barring a great punch by Barrera, we are looking at a beating until the referee rescues MAB. 2. Rocky should have won the first fight. I’m not saying that the win for MAB wasn’t deserved. I thought that he won the fight, but there was this reluctance on Juarez’s part and it cost him in that fight. He had a spent force sitting right in front of him…ready to lose, but he allowed MAB to B.S. him a little and he lost because of it. In the rematch, I see Juarez with either a late stoppage or a UD, depending on the ambition of the younger man.

What is going on my friend? One of these days, when my finances permit and my jobs aren’t demanding all of my time, I will travel, and I will be sitting in a packed arena in the Philippines, watching Manny Pacquiao in action.
JMM has fallen off the radar, but I still think that he is a formidable opponent for nearly anyone in and around that division. He created the blue print to beat Manny Pacquiao and showed the heart of a lion by hanging in there and rallying back. He didn’t flagrantly head butt as MAB did in his bout with Pacman to avoid punishment. He fought a clean fight and fought his heart out. I have a lot of respect for him as a fighter. Boring…I mean, JMM rules! Ajnin, I don’t think that that boring thing was a slip at all. JMM doesn’t present the most exciting bouts some of the time, but after watching Hopkins-Tarver, JMM is Sugar Ray Leonard by comparison.
Bobby Pacquiao has more of a chance against MAB because of the diminished reflexes and the toll that the ring wars have taken on his body. I would favor Barrera, but if “The Sniper” is going to pull an upset, it will be over him. Rocky Juarez is too young and strong and punches too precisely for Bobby, I think. He will fight his heart out, but I see Juarez stopping him in the middle rounds with those short, hard punches.

Good day to you! Well been reading your mailbag regularly because of links to Pacland…I like your style…so relaxed… because some sites who have similar concept doesn’t bode to my taste. They are full of thrash, and most writers tend to show their readers how intelligent or smart they are when it comes to boxing…when in fact most of them are just rooting for their boxers…just like fans.
I like your style…so light…just like a conversation with a friend!! And keep it up! Though I know you are tired of all these Pac questions, you still you have patience to it!! Sorry my long introduction! LOL. My question is: Pac looks invincible @ 130…if he ever fight Freitas today @ 135 who would win and UD or KO??
I know pac can beat him given the time of 1 ? to 2 yrs from now. I’m a Pac fan but the thing is that Manny just registered 128 in his last fight, and some say 127.5, and fact is that Popo would weigh at least 143 @ fight time.. plus this guy hits hard and accustomed to, to take a lightweight punch.
I think Pac’s advantage would only be his stamina, pressure and killer instinct.. because Popo doesn’t really like pressure, he tends to give some ground and just use his mobility which causes his lack of gas in the later rounds.. Pac ‘s speed I think wouldn’t be a factor because of added weight, his phenomenal power wouldn’t also because Popo can bang with real 135 pounders. What’s your opinion about this?
I’ll go with Pac because of his pressure and work rate.. More on UD but I wouldn’t be surprise for a late TKO

What is going on man? Most other writers that have mailbags try to show how intelligent they are? Well, they do…sad. I am pleased to see that you enjoy what I am putting out there and there is no need to dress up this bag. I want to make this a fun segment and I’m having fun writing it. The reason that it seems like I’m speaking with friends is because that’s the way that I look at it. Sure, there are some real jerks out there that I want to kick in the grapes so very bad, but I am a professional, and I cannot attack somebody just because they disagree with me or call me a bad name.
I have never been impressed by Popo or his fashion sense. I know that I’m a New England boy here in the states, but I swear to God that the clothing that this guy wears must squeeze the life out of his Popo’s. It’s like spandex to the supreme! I don’t care what shape you are in…that can’t be comfortable. He also has these pictures of himself airbrushed all over his clothing. That’s an ego people. Sure, I have a pin that I wear with my face on it and the saying: “Geno Rules” written across, but that’s only one pin. There is no airbrushing going on here. Airbrushing has to be the worst thing in the world. Does anyone actually wear clothing that is airbrushed with some stupid design or image of a rock star or something? My Aunt Karen has a shirt with her dog “Max” airbrushed on it. She wears it all the time, especially considering that they had to get rid of the dog. My Uncle Ron tried to take that “man’s best friend” to the next level, if you read me.
I would pick Pacman big time to stop Freitas. Acelino is an awkward boxer with reasonable power, but he is sloppy and doesn’t seem that balanced. I see Pacman waiting and coming right up the middle with straight punches and ending with right hooks and body work. There is no question that Popo is stronger, but he is not as technically good. Pacman by late TKO.

I’m glad a poster brought up the name Salvador Sanchez up in your June 14 Ask Geno II. I would like to disagree with you that the 4 named fighters, namely, Corrales, Pacquiao, PBF and Castillo will register a win over this guy Sanchez. I believe Sanchez would have happily given them their chances and prevailed. I’m not taking away from the 4 and they certainly are exceptional. Although I’m Filipino, I’d probably root for Pacquiao but will place a hefty bet on Sanchez. We are not talking nations here, just pure boxing. Sanchez for me is the epitome of greatness. To watch him fight is awesome, a pure boxer with punching power and moves, and stamina, and charisma. Azumah Nelson was the true test for Sanchez and he came out unscathed. That fight is embedded in my memory bank. For me, Sanchez IS boxing. Yes, too bad he did not win against a concrete wall…he should have used his gloves instead of his sportscar. A big chunk of boxing went with him. We all lost.

I think that I confused the issue. I only picked Diego Corrales to beat him and the others to lose, but the way that I worded it sounded as if I picked all four to beat him. I switched topics too quickly and was actually speaking of Wilfredo Gomez. I even said that: “I’m pretty sure that nobody could beat Sal Sanchez.” So, it’s my mistake for certain and I’m sorry for the confusion. When I ramble, things can sometime get muddled. I really think that Sanchez is one of the all time greats and the fact that he beat Azumah Nelson shows me what he is all about. I am a big fan of “The Professor” and he was master of the ring, for sure. I thought that it was a true tragedy for Sanchez to meet that fate when he could have meant so much more to not only boxing, but to his family. I also thought that Nelson was a class act for dedicating his win against Gabriel Ruelas to the late warrior. We all did lose my friend.
VALERO’S BIGGEST TEST

I would like to ask, who do you think will win against Vicente Mosquera and Edwin Valero? It is going to be a huge test for Valero but if he wins, I want to see him fight Joan Guzman that would be a hell of a fight. Thanks and more power!

Without question, this is the toughest test for this knockout puncher. Valero is, 19-0, 19 KO’s, with 18 in the first round! That is amazing and some of the wins were against reasonable opposition. Well, he’s going from reasonable to good here and is the moment of truth. If he plows through the seasoned and proven Mosquera, that will prove what he’s all about, especially if this goes into the later rounds. He hasn’t been beyond the 2nd round!
Thanks for the props on the mailbag my friend, and I’m going with Valero to win by KO in the early rounds. This guy is incredibly impressive.

This is my first time to write in your famous ask Geno…You’re very popular here in the Philippines man and I always read your section…Sir, what can you say about the bout between PBB and Pacman? What is going on? With PBF running out of options, which may sound silly. You may even refer to the entire situation as a “silly dilly,” but very few people use that phrase anymore. Miguel Cotto is supposed to face Jose Luis Castillo, which is a great match if it happens. Ricky Hatton seems to want to move back down since he was proven not nearly as effective in his close shave against Luis Collazo. I don’t think that Hatton wants the PBF bout that badly. Style-wise, it just isn’t a good match for him. So, PBF has Antonio Margarito knocking at the door with a bag full of 8 million dollars, but he’s not answering. He knows that he will make 30 million or so if he faces Oscar De La Hoya. So, he is in a holding pattern until the “Golden Boy” elects to accept the challenge. I don’t see him facing the Pacman for several reasons. One, the timing is bad. Manny has 2 bouts set up already, which pushes this bout at least one year into the future and that’s when De La Hoya is supposed to have another comeback bout…presumably against Mayweather, JR. In the meantime, expect PBF to take on a reasonable, but not overly dangerous fighter. He won’t be facing anyone that I’ve named.

Will you consider taking him up to the lightweight div.? What are your plans considering the fact that Manny had proven his superiority in the Featherweight division? Thanks for digging the sack dude. Hmm. If I were in control of Manny Pacquiao’s fate, what would I do? I would move him up to Lightweight and challenge Acelino Freitas or Juan Diaz. The luster is gone from the Super Featherweight division and it is time to move on if he wants to keep his popularity moving in the right direction. The fights with Diaz and Freitas, in my opinion, are winnable bouts and both have excitement written all over them. I would definitely send him there. A bigger fight waiting for him? There are some big names out there, but I don’t know if you can beat knocking out Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales. That’s pretty darn good.

Hello there, just wanna hear your reaction about my suggestions. I think Pacman should fight for the featherweight belt then the Super feather and then move up to get the lightweight so his legacy will be known as the only Asian (even Mexicans Haven’t done it) to hold titles at 5 different weight divisions (he already held the 112 and 122 belts). Instead of fighting Larios he should have fought any of the existing 126 lbs champs. Thanks for answering all my questions

What’s going on? I personally think that the match ups are more important than the titles. It’s an accomplishment for sure, but with so many belts floating around and the new “Super Champions” that the WBA has been giving out, titles have lost a lot of their charm and worth. If we could only have this unification tournament…all of the belts and here’s the key: Once unified, they can’t be separated anymore. How do you like those apples? Vinjo! Thanks man…Pacland is my second home it seems, and contrary to popular belief, I am not a nuthugger…whatever that means! How dare anyone state that about me when I’m a somewhat happily married man! What were we talking about again? Oh yeah…I remember. I don’t think that a PBF vs. Pacman can be compared to Leonard vs. Hearns. I don’t think that anyone can be compared to Hearns…he was a freak of nature. What a great fighter! As far as magnitude, I think that you can draw a comparison…at least by today’s standards. Boxing isn’t popular, really…at least not compared to what it once was, when it was everywhere. Do you remember when Mike Tyson did T.V. ads? Holyfield tried it too for Burger King, but after he spoke, they realized that they wanted the people to eat, not sleep, and let him go. Holyfield was perfectly fit…he’d never eat a double whopper, would he? It was unbelievable. I know that Paris Hilton used sex appeal to sell burgers, as she soaped herself up to wash a car. Both have devastating KO punches and are southpaws… PACMAN has more experience and is working on his dynamite RIGHT hand. VALERO has an A-BOMB LEFT but so as the PACMAN. I think PACMAN’s new defensive skills and his DYNAMITE RIGHT hand will make the difference in this EXPLOSIVE fight… is this fight part of Nostradamus’ prediction = World War 3??? What you think??

As of now, it’s premature to place Edwin Valero in the same category as the Pacman, but he is certainly making his move. You can’t help but to get excited about a guy that is destroying everyone in one round. Give him a few more years because at this time, I don’t think that he belongs in the ring with Manny.

This is my second entry to your RSR Mailbag. And I want to ask more because you’re really a boxing genius.
I love the 80s era of boxing. I want to know about your analysis on dream fights of Pacman against the stars of the 80s in their primes at Super featherweight.

Boxing genius? Me? That rocks! I would use profanity to express my joy at your assessment, but sadly, I cannot. We are a family website and my potty mouth doesn’t really go with the image we are putting out there.
1. Pacman vs. Julio Cesar Chavez. I am a huge fan of Chavez the fighter. He was a perfect warrior with relentless pressure placed on every opponent. He walked through ten shots to land one of his own. He is one of the all time greats, as far as I am concerned. Manny would really have is hands full in this one. He would have to land that straight left and move and hopefully try to punish the body of JCC enough to take him out later in the fight. I don’t see it happening though. JCC wins this one by TKO in 8 or 9 rounds. 2. Pacman vs. Hector “Macho” Camacho. I think that this would be a very competitive bout, but Camacho would probably make a stinker out of it, somewhat leading to a close and controversial decision win for the “macho man.” 3. Pacman vs. Sal Sanchez. Sal Sanchez was the man and I don’t see anyone really beating him unless they possess a really long jab that might keep him away. Pacman would forge ahead and there would be uneasy moments for Sanchez, but I see him winning a decision. 4. Pacman VS Barry McGuigan. Okay, Barry McGuigan was a good fighter with a big punch and lived up to his nickname of “The Clones Cyclone,” but I see him running into the punch of the Pacman and getting stopped late in the fight. 5. Pacman vs. Roger Mayweather. Mayweather is a very hard puncher and is tough, but his weakness is his chin. If he didn’t have a glass jaw, he would have never lost, but since he does, I bet that Pacman finds it and ends it in 6 rounds. 6. Pacman vs. Meldric Taylor. Now this is Taylor, prior to JCC. Meldric was brilliant and looked like another Sugar Ray Leonard, but quicker before stepping into the ring with JCC. In this bout, I expect Taylor to box his way to a decision win. I am not saying Pacman will easily win but do you think it will be a great fight? And I also realized that every great fighter fought Pacman was already old BARRERA (29), MORALES (29), JMM(29), LARIOS(29) (when they fought Pacman.
Do you think its time for PACMONSTER to fight younger but deserving opponent like for example VALERO? Who do you prefer?

That is a great nickname! “El Boksingero” is perfect. Now, I need to get a crown… I think that Valero is too green to face Pacman right now, but Juan Diaz, the WBA Lightweight Champion is only 22. There’s a challenge right there. I want to see Pacman move up and challenge some of these bigger, but not too big, guys.

Man, many thanks for posting my last mail in one of your previous posts. I just feel really honored to see my mail in your mailbag. My question is, since you chose Edwin Valero as the best from that list of names I gave you last time, how would you then predict the outcome of a fight between Valero & Pacman? Who’s got the better chance of beating the opposing guy? Both are great punchers and Valero has 100% KO record, I really haven’t seen him fight yet, but you, maybe you already have.
I just wanna ask how was he in his last fight? Is he as quick as Pacman or even faster than him? Has he fought any known boxer already? I just have these questions in mind simply because I think Valero is an exciting fighter as well, just like Pacman, but Pacman’s got more exposure and is undoubtedly very popular nowadays. I think a matchup between these two big punchers would be a very exciting match to watch and look forward to. Who do you think will be the one risking his reputation more than the other if this fight is ever gonna happen?

I have seen Valero once and it was very short. I even forget who he was facing, but I didn’t’ learn much more than we already know: The guy can punch. If I were managing him, I would not put him in with the Pacman yet. Rushing a fighter can be the worst thing in the world for him, as it was with David Reid when he faced “Tito” Trinidad. I look forward to an eventual match up between the two, but I think that it’s too early to push for it. Valero is one exciting prospect though and I really look forward to seeing him on television…maybe HBO, if they don’t want to charge me 50 smackers to see it.

1. I think that I would favor Wladimir Klitschko, Lamon Brewster, and possibly Sam Peter to defeat the current WBA Champ. It is still yet to be determined if Valuev can take a really big shot from a heavyweight. These three would certainly test him. 2. Find a dead guy? Hmm. Time machine. I would fly around and pick up Larry Holmes and Muhammad Ali. I hope that there is more than one seat on this time machine. I don’t have enough room on my lap for both of them and I wouldn’t want them sitting there anyway. Who knows what time travel does to the anatomy and I don’t want these two spreading rumors about me… Okay, if Larry Donald can out-box Valuev, these two will have a field day.
