If Floyd Mayweather, Jr. insists that he has to fight on May 5th at the MGM Grand, then it’s almost a forgone conclusion that he won’t be fighting Manny Pacquiao.
Blame who you want, cry til’ you die, it doesn’t change the fact that boxing won’t get the “dream fight” it’s been begging and crying for this past three years.
It’s really ridulous. A sick, twisted joke. Okay, no more drug testing issues, then it’s about the money. If it’s not about the money, then they got to fight at this date, but the other guy wants this date, and so on, and so forth. Advertisement
Excuse me, I just can’t help but be amused at how boxing has been treating and making a mockery of it’s loyal and fanatical followers.
So let me ask you this: If not Pacquiao, then who is the undefeated Mayweather willing to face on May 5?
Now, if greatness is expected of the guy, I say go out there and fight a bigger opponent that he can truly risk his unblemished record against, and test his greatness.
Go for Sergio Martinez at a catchweight of 154!
As much criticism Pacquiao gets from his detractors, he did fight bigger opponents and stepped up to challenges. Why not Mayweather? Mayweather did have some success at 154 against Oscar Dela Hoya when he won by split-decision back in the same date he is set to fight again some five years ago back in 2007. I’d pay to see that fight! And as great as Mayweather’s fans say that he is, that should be a highly-competitive scrap.
Unfortunately, there has been zero talk of Mayweather facing Martinez. I guess he is too big for the self-proclaimed greatest fighter of all-time. Next!
A couple of names that have been floated around are the 21-year-old cinnamon phenomenon Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero.
Let me start off with Guerrero. Okay, that’s all I have to say about Guerrero.

In case you thought that was a typo, it’s not. What do you really want me to say about that match-up? Who is asking for that fight other than Guerrero’s creative and hard working PR team? Plus, coming from a shoulder injury? Next!
Alvarez is a very promising kid, but let’s face it, he is too “green” for Mayweather at the moment. If you say he’s not, then you are either overrating Alvarez or do not think Mayweather is as great as some people say he is. Plus, it’s been reported that Mayweather is not willing to pay the kind of money Alvarez wants for a fight of this magnitude. Next!
Amir Khan was a main option, but he screwed it up by losing to Lamont Peterson. Like I’ve written in the past, Golden Boy’s trump card against Arum and Pacquiao is their talented young triumverate of Ortiz, Khan and Alvarez. It should’ve been Khan next, then Alvarez maybe by year’s end or next year. They can still sell Khan against Mayweather, but they will have to convince him to stop crying about his loss to Peterson first. Next!
Miguel Cotto is an option. But he’s with Arum. Unless he leaves Arum completelt, then there really isn’t a point in talking about Top Rank fighter with all the craziness and mudslinging going on. Next!
So that leaves Mayweather with one true option that’s compelling to boxing fans: Fight Larry Merchant!
I’m kidding.. What I’m trying to say is, there’s a reason why Mayweather keeps calling out Pacquiao’s name each time he has a fight coming up. You’re a pretty smart person right? Figure it out.
