Having avoided jail time until June 1 in a Las Vegas domestic violence case involving an attack on his ex-girlfriend while two of their children watched in September 2010, it seems a forgone conclusion that undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be re-licensed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission when he applies.
Still, he must re-apply, for every fighter’s license expires on Dec. 31 of every year, according to NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer.
“He has not yet applied,” wrote Kizer in an e-mail to RingTV.com. “Once he does, the chairman will place Mr. Mayweather’s application on a commission agenda for hearing.”
Mayweather’ had been facing a 90-day jail sentence that was slated to begin this past Friday, a scenario which threatened his announced plan to return to the ring on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with Manny Pacquiao being his chief target.
It is unclear wheather or not Mayweather will be considered as seriously as the four others Pacquiao already was set to select from, comprised of WBA junior middleweight beltholder Miguel Cotto, WBA/WBO lightweight titleholder Juan Manuel Marquez, IBF/WBA junior welterweight beltwinner Lamont Peterson or Peterson’s WBO division counterpart Tim Bradley.
That foursome is to be presented as options on or after January 10 by Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, and his advisor, Michael Koncz., in Pacquiao’s native Philippines.
But Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who has handled Mayweather’s most recent fights, doubts that Arum wants to match Pacquiao against Mayweather.
Schaefer has even suggested that a he is close to reaching a deal for Mayweather to fight on the target date against another opponent to be announced as early as this week.
Schaefer named the prime alternative candidates for Mayweather to be RING No. 2-rated lightweight Robert Guerrero, a five-belt winner over the course of three divisions, and RING No. 2-ranked junior middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, holder of his division’s WBC crown.
Mayweather is coming off of a fourth-round knockout of Victor Ortiz in September that earned him the WBC’s welterweight title belt.
