SAN DIEGO, Jan 7, 2012 ? Now that the world of boxing has absorbed the stunning decision in a Las Vegas courtroom Friday allowing Floyd Mayweather to postpone serving jail time until after a planned fight on May 5, everyone?s asking the same question: who will be his opponent?
The answer the world wants to hear is Manny Pacquiao, the wildly popular 33-year-old fighter and Congressman from the Philippines, still considered by many the best pound for pound boxer in the world. But Pacquiao?s promoter Bob Arum says it?s not going to happen. Arum ran through a list of reasons a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight wouldn?t happen on May 5.
Meanwhile, Mayweather?s manager Leonard Ellerbe told news media an opponent would be announced next week, this on Friday less than an hour after Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa postponed Mayweather?s jail sentence on domestic violence charges until June 1 so he could fight as originally planned at the MGM Grand on May 5.
