Now that Mayweather?s jail sentence has been delayed until June 1, his scheduled return to the ring on May 5 will go ahead as planned. Before Mayweather was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Dec. 21, in which he was required to begin serving on Jan. 6, it was rumored that the highly anticipated ?Mega Fight? with Many Pacquiao may finally take place. Those plans were temporarily put on hold because of the original sentencing.
But today, when the news of Mayweather?s delayed jail sentence was first announced, there was a ray of hope that finally we may get to see the fight that we?ve all been waiting for. That hope was crushed when Top Rank CEO Bob Arum said that Pacquiao would not be able to fight until June.
Ironically this leaves both Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao looking for a new opponent. The last couple of weeks we?ve heard about the short list of opponents mentioned for Pacquiao. Some of the same names on that list could also be potential opponents for Mayweather as well.
There has already been talk of a fight with the young, Mexican WBC Super Welterweight Champion Saul Alvarez, for Mayweather. Since he is promoted by Goldenboy Promotions, who also work with Mayweather, the fight shouldn?t be that difficult to make. It would also be a very lucrative fight as well, given the fact that it would be held on Cinco de Mayo (Mexican Independence Day) and Alvarez is Mexican.
