The beginning of the boxing year tends to start slow, and generally tends to build its way up as the year goes on, while we await for boxing’s first big fight. Networks usually take advantage of the break in between the NFL conference title games and the Super Bowl. With HBO recently having to postpone their Houston doubleheader that was scheduled for January 28, there are no big fights or big name fighters to grab the headlines and get the media and fans excited about boxing. December is usually a slow month, but this year we had a jammed packed end of the year fight schedule. Sure there are no Morales vs. Garcia and Kirkland vs. Molina fights to end the month, but the first month of 2012 does supply plenty of intriguing matchups that should get us talking about the sport we love.
This Friday night is the official start of ESPN2?s Friday Night Fights. The card has some really good matchups that should be very be entertaining and at the same time revealing. In the main event we have an intriguing matchup between two solid 168 pound contenders, with the winner destined to move on to bigger and better things. Dyah Davis vs. Alfonso Lopez looks like a very even match up on paper. Alfonso Lopez proved his worth in a fight with Kelly Pavlik while Dyah Davis has fought a deeper resume but has shown to be a very inconsistent fighter. Something tells me that Dyah pulls this one out, but I wouldn’t bet the house on it. This is really anyone?s fight. Lopez has been in with Pavlik, who is better then anyone Dyah has ever faced. He seems to be the busier fighter but both men have skills and the ability to box on the outside. It may start slow but in the end we will should get a good, competitive fight that should tell us a lot about the future for both fighters.
