Unbeaten featherweight contender Miguel “Mikey” Garcia could earn a title shot if he gets beyond an opponent to be determined on the Showtime-televised undercard of a rematch between WBO beltholder Orlando Salido and former titleholder Juan Manuel Lopez in Puerto Rico on March 10, Garcia’s promoter, Bob Arum, told RingTV.com on Tuesday.
Garcia (27-0, 23 knockouts) scored his sixth straight knockout — the 12th among his past 13 fights — in October when he dropped Juan Carlos Martinez three times before finishing him off in the fourth round. The bout took place on the undercard of a main event featuring Nonito Donaire vs. Omar Narvaez.
Before the bout, Garcia had declared himself ready for any of the division’s best, including Salido (37-11-2, 25 KOs) and Lopez (31-1, 28 KOs).
“Mikey Garcia is going to be on the card,” said Arum. “The idea is that if he wins, then he will fight the winner between Lopez and Salido.”
Although Garcia could not be reached, he had expressed his desire to fight the best in the aftermath of his victory over Martinez in October.
“I think that my style would cause a lot of problems for the other champions. I can fight coming forward if I have to, I can also fight moving away,” said Garcia, whose long arms and height at nearly 5-foot-8 could also be troublesome.
