To the consternation of many Mayweather critics, after a competitive first quarter between the two teams, the Patriots would run away with the 41-23 victory and the fighter who calls himself “Money” would come away from the contest just that much richer.
Mike Colbert, sports book director at M Resort, where Mayweather (or members of his entourage) allegedly made the bet, wouldn’t confirm nor deny the rumor, but the story has been circulating throughout the local Las Vegas sports books. The buzz has even been the subject of a feature article by respected journalist, Norm Clarke at the Las Vegas Review Journal.
The Mayweather bet against the openly Christian, well-regarded “good guy” of the NFL, Tebow, plays perfectly into Mayweather’s bad guy image and, just like in his professional life, the manufacturing of the villain role has paid off nicely.
Professionally, Mayweather’s career remains on hold until after serving his jail sentence. While rumors of Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations have very little merit, there’s little doubt that the boxer will begin looking for a viable opponent as soon as he is free and clear of the jail time. A May 5th date remains reserved at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for the fighter’s next contest.
In Mayweather’s last bout, in September of 2011, he stopped defending WBC welterweight titlist, Victor Ortiz via odd, controversial TKO 4 when an intentional Ortiz headbutt led to a surprise knockout blow from Mayweather that many consider a cheap shot.
