Once again WBC Welterweight Champion and this writer?s #1 pound-for-pound boxer, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has thrown a monkey wrench into a much-anticipated super fight against pound-for-pound rival Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather was sentenced to six months in jail (with three months being suspended) for beating up the mother of his kids in front of the kids, along with other classy behavior that has become so consistent with men possessing the surname ?Mayweather?. With Roger choking a female boxer and Floyd Senior?s drug trafficking past, what a shock that Floyd Jr. would travel down a bumpy road and find himself behind bars. I think Ms. Cleo could have foreseen this sh*t. The boxing world is up in arms about the fight once again being delayed and although I share many people?s frustrations, I think I just might have a solution. Instead of promoter Bob Arum taking the Pacman show in another direction and setting up a different fight in the interim, why not get Floyd to sign an agreement that he will face Pacquiao next when he is released from jail which could be as soon as early March?
This would leave Mayweather legally bound to fight Manny and they can begin constructing the venue in Vegas that will host the fight, as well as early promotion. Floyd begins his jail sentence on January 6th. They can begin rolling the 24/7 cameras while Floyd is in jail and able to exercise lightly after his first week. It would be fascinating to see Floyd in jail doing light workouts and being interviewed about the fight, life in jail, etc. Perhaps even Dr. Phil might pay Floyd a visit and try to provide some much needed therapy. Once he is released (which could be as soon as March and as late as early April) he can go into full training camp, take care of promoting the fight, etc. by May and the fight could happen as early as late June.
Yes, most super fights occur in the spring or late fall but this fight is so big and has been so eagerly anticipated that it almost doesn’t matter when it happens as long as it happens. Sugar Ray Leonard rematched Tommy Hearns in June, Leonard also fought Duran the first time in late June, and Mike Tyson fought Lennox Lewis and rematched Evander Holyfield in late June as well. These were all huge fights held in the summer, so it would be far from unprecedented.
