MANILA, Philippines – Giovani Segura is out to wrest the WBO flyweight crown from Brian Viloria.
In yesterday?s official weigh-in at the Midas Hotel along Roxas Boulevard, the 29-year-old challenger from Mexico sounded like the hungrier fighter ? literally.
?I?m hungry I want to eat everything,? he said after he tipped the scales at exactly 112 lb.
?Today all I want to think of is food and tomorrow I think of Viloria. Right now I want all kinds of Filipino food,? said Segura, moving up in weight for today?s showdown.
?We like your lechon (roast pig),? said Richard Mota, a member of Team Segura.
Minutes before the weigh-in, Segura sat quietly in one of the back-row chairs of a function room that looked too small to hold an official weigh-in for a world title bout
While he looked serious, surrounded by his team members, it was pretty obvious Segura had his weight in check because he kept on sipping water from a plastic bottle.
?Yeah, I?m comfortable with my weight. I?m comfortable. I?m done with the hard work,? said Segura, adding that he should climb the ring at around 120 to 122 lb.
Later on, Segura said he wants to get the job done, so he can come home to his family, including his four-year-old daughter and a six-month-old boy, Giovani Jr.
?I want to go home and play with my kids and have fun,? said the boxer who broke down in Wednesday?s press conference talking about the street kids of Manila.
Segura is both gentle and humble, and said whatever he?s getting for this fight goes straight to the bank.
?About buying cars or buying houses? Well, it?s sad because we don?t get paid as much as the other people. We?re not at that level.
