According to recent talk from Richard Schaefer, Erik Morales will make his first defense of the WBC light welterweight title against Danny Garcia. The bout, scheduled for January 28th, will be held at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas on the HBO Boxing After Dark Telecast.
Morales is coming off of a respectable 10th round stoppage victory against Pablo Cano (22-1-1) this past September. Cano, who entered the fight with an undefeated record, displayed the inexperience that most 22-year-olds tend to when met by an illustrious veteran with the likes of Morales.
Cano?s spotless record was introduced to its first loss that evening because of a sickening cut that gave the impression of a second eyelid forming. Cano?s raw skill set and inexperienced corner essentially awarded Morales with a belt in his fourth different weight class.
Danny ?Swift? Garcia enters with a narrative similar to Cano?s against ?El Terrible?. The 23-year-old Garcia holds a 22-0 record with 14 knockout victories over a four-year span.
Unfortunately for the aging Morales, Danny Garcia is no Pablo Cano.
Outside of the similar records and youthful years, Morales? last opponent and his future challenger are nothing like. While Cano made his debut on American soil in the his fight against Morales, the Philly native, Garcia, returns to Texas for a fourth time in his brief career.
