Pacquiao-Lite vs. Mayweather-Lite Next Weekend!
Lamont Peterson is going to lose to Amir Khan by hook or by crook, as I noted in last week’s column, but there is a large contingency out there that think Khan is going to have a tough fight on his hands when he does fight Peterson next weekend. Peterson may not be the toughest fighter at 140, but he comes on strong late in the fight and he can box, which may be a perfect foil for Khan’s arm-flailing punches, and enough to make him look bad. If Khan does look bad, or even gets a gift in that fight, it would seriously effect his chances to fight Floyd Mayweather in May, or at least kill some of the buzz for the fight.
When Mayweather fought Victor Ortiz last year, he got Ortiz off of the biggest win of his career against the always-fatiguing Berto and had a large contingency of Mexican fans behind him. It was a fight based off of the momentum Ortiz carried into the fight. Khan narrowly beating Timothy Bradley’s leftovers would make him seem less of a likely opponent, but then again, Peterson also did give Ortiz some hell as well. Mayweather, and Pacquiao for that matter, will be put under the microscope for every opponent he faces and very few opponents scream “BUY THIS” when it comes to Mayweather. Time will tell, but I think next weekend will establish two things:
