Oscar De La Hoya has hinted that he could agree, in principle, to fight pound-for-pound prince Floyd Mayweather Junior over the weekend. De La Hoya is on the record as saying that he has narrowed his options down to either retiring or fighting in September against Mayweather.
Father of the Year Floyd Senior has already stated that his will train De La Hoya to beat up his own son and De La Hoya said Wednesday: “I don’t want to make the mistake of retiring then coming back. I’m deciding on whether to fight the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Obviously I understand that he could beat me, but at the same time I also understand that I can beat him and go out (with a bang).”
In an effort to clear the way for the fight to happen, Floyd Junior has already bought himself out of his Top Rank promotional contract, realising Oscar is loath to work with Bob Arum. The signs are looking good that the biggest fight since Lewis v Tyson, a fight initially dismissed as impossible, could actually take place.
The Golden Boy does make a habit of contracting himself on these things, though, so the best advise is “don’t buy it until you eye it”.
