Tagbilaran City is really serious in improving its budding amateur boxing program.
The Tagbilaran City Government last week hired Cuban boxing coach Honorato Reyes Espinosa to train aspiring Boholano fighters.
The effort was done in cooperation with Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado.
“Gov. Aumentado helped us in this endeavor. This project is not for Tagbilaran alone but for the whole Bohol Province,” said Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Neri Lim.
Espinosa will be in Tagbilaran next week, after his contract with North Cotabato ends. Espinosa has been in the country since January training boxers in North Cotabato.
Espinosa will be paid $1,500 per month. The money will come from the City Government of Tagbilaran and the Bohol Provincial Government.
For the moment, Espinosa will use the ALA Gym in Barangay Taloto as his base camp.
Tagbilaran has been active in both amateur and professional boxing after Cebu’s boxing patron Antonio Aldeguer built a boxing gym in Taloto.
Tagbilaran’s developmental boxing team won the overall championship in the 19th Visayas Inter-City Developmental Amateur Boxing championship for the first time since 1996. Last April, Tagbilaran took the runner-up title in the 20th edition in Tacloban City.
