Hello once again and welcome to part 2 of my weekly mailbag. I hope that everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. It felt like there was a BBQ competition going on this Sunday as I stood in front of my grill and so too did both my neighbors. It was a silent argument: Who had the best meat in town? Whatever the case, my steak and burgers went over very well at my get together. They just couldn’t get enough! I don’t know how people can be vegetarians, but I respect it. I tried a soy burger once and it was NASTY. So my holiday weekend was the bomb and it was far different than the parties that my family used to throw. When I was a kid, if there was a party, there was a fistfight, or a loud argument at least. So, I am thankful for the harmony that I had this weekend.
When I read the comments and questions, I get an idea just who the public favorites are. Many have written to me regarding Wladimir Klitschko, Manny Pacquiao, and Ricky Hatton, and I respect everyone’s opinion. Sometimes, we get a person that really can’t get his point across without being abrasive, but I take the good with the bad. You can’t make everyone happy. I would like for everyone to be happy and singing in the streets, but that’s not reality. Some people have to vent and if that is the case, this is your place to be…unless you are going to call me a bigot or state that I’m xenophobic. Edit that out of your comment before you send it to me. It’s stupid anyway. You completely disqualify yourself from winning the “Geno Bambino Question of the Month” award. You get more bees with honey than vinegar!
Hell’s Kitchen is coming back. I know that this isn’t boxing related, but I wanted to talk about it and this is my mailbag, and I want to talk about this reality show. FOX has this program with this angry chef, Gordon Ramsey. He’s the Simon Cowell of that show, but he actually attacks the chefs that work under him. He insults them left and right and that my friends, is entertainment. I used to manage a Roy Rogers, the fast food joint, and I should have employed those tactics with my workers…you know, taking a roast beef sandwich and smearing it their faces. That would rock! I would then tell them that if they don’t like it, quit. Where else are you going to earn minimum wage?!!!
So, let’s dig into the rest of the questions and comments here, and see what’s on your minds…

When the Prince was sentenced for driving charges, I’ve read several articles saying how good he was and will still be if given a chance for a comeback. I know many will disagree with me, but I think Hamed is the most overrated featherweight boxer. I don’t even think that he belongs to the cream of the crops of feather division such as Sanchez, Morales, Barrera & Pacquiao.

Prince Hamed was a good fighter with a big punch, but he was not technically sound enough to be considered on the same level as a Sanchez, Morales, MAB, or Pacman. In his best bout, he knocked out Kevin Kelly. That was in 1997. How is he going to be a big factor, considering that he goes strictly on reflexes, nine years later? It’s just wishful thinking. Hamed could have been something more than he was, but he didn’t want it.

Legal issues, auto accidents, and violence outside the ring have robbed the boxing world of some great athletes who had a world of potential. Who do you consider to be the four or five biggest wastes of talent in modern times?

This is a very interesting question. I would definitely say that Ike Ibeabuchi, who is now a myth of sorts, could not keep it in his pants and because he has no consideration of the law and of other people, he is where he belongs. Many want him out of prison, mostly because they can make money off of him, but he should rot. Tony Ayala, JR., is another waste of talent and a waste of a person now that I think of it. In 1983, he raped a school teacher and went to prison for it. In 2001, he broke into a house with the intent to rape again, after his release from prison. What the hell is wrong with this guy? I will say that he was one heck of a fighter in the early eighties and would have been something special, but he was such a scumbag that he threw it all away.
Okay, there’s two…three to go. Hmm. I know that he wouldn’t have had a big impact on boxing, but what about Jo el Scott? He was 21-2, 20 KO’s, and at one time, KO Magazine named him one of the prospects to watch. He lost a couple of bouts and fell off the prospect radar, but he now resides in a small cell, where he belongs. He raped and murdered a disabled elderly woman and had a history of sexual misconduct. Okay, I’m straying from your question here a tad, but boxing is a sport where the poorest person in the world can become a king. There’s a lot of pressure and there is a lot of bad element out there that can affect the upcoming pugilist and Scott was a crack head, by his own admission. Who knows how much that added to his two defeats. People with a unlawful past can find redemption in the ring, but so many others go back to the destructive lifestyle.
Clifford “Black Rhino” Etienne was by no means a world beater, but he was a good heavyweight, that came out of prison to become HBO’s newest star. He lost to Fres Oquendo and Mike Tyson and then had two more losses along the way, leading him into a depression, I guess, which ended in more crime and a return to the big house. That was too bad because, win or lose, Etienne made it a fun fight. Okay, not so much a waste as far as boxing possibilities, is Tim “Doc” Anderson, a heavyweight that is in prison for murdering his manager, Rick Parker. The story goes that Anderson was told to take a dive against a ridiculous and shameful black eye on the sport, Mark Gastineau. This former NFL star had benefited from Parker’s crooked ways and had most of his fights fixed, reportedly. Well, Anderson refused to take a dive and Parker reportedly and I believe this, poisoned him. He lost the match and was never the same afterward. Anderson took the law into his own hands and killed Rick Parker. Do you remember the episode of Law & Order, when a journalist for a rag was murdered and everyone outside of this club began to clap? I have that image when it comes to Parker. Free Tim Anderson! Since, I’m on this “release the criminals,” let’s free the West Memphis 3. If you get a chance, watch “Paradise Lost,” and tell me what you think.

Sorry, I just had to say that. Anyway, 2006 is shaping to be a great year for boxing, starting with Pac’s win over EM down to the mega buck fight between PAC and MAB. I really can’t wait for the day’s P4P fighters to face off against each other. I say Wright outboxes Taylor for the UD, PBF getting a split decision on De La Hoya, Pac destroying both EM and MAB and Margarito b*tchslapping PBF. I also see a blown up Castillo knocking out Corrales…and Corrales spitting out his mouthpiece. Surprisingly, I find myself a bit excited about the fossil match between Hopkins and Tarver. I also want to see Arce bulldozing his way inside the P4P rankings. What’s your take on these fights? What is your honest opinion of Rey Bautista?

How are you doing? Okay, I agree with Wright over Taylor, PBF over De La Hoya, Pac over MAB and EM…and concerning Margarito’s attempt at PBF…I agree! I am in the minority, but I think that Margarito is too strong. Watching his fights recently, I have been convinced that he is going to pull the upset…so much so, that I might wager a tad if I have a tad to bet. Castillo over Corrales too. The only thing that’s different is that I don’t share the excitement for the Tarver-Hopkins farce. I would watch my Grandfather’s Viagra challenge…long story, no pun intended.
I am a big Arce fan. He is arrogant and incredibly talented. He is the bomb my friend…and my honest opinion regarding Rey Bautista: too early to tell, but somebody to certainly watch.

An avid RSR reader here! I read a ton of mailbags and this is by far the most humorous, entertaining and informative mailbag yet! Ok, that’s enough nosing for one email (all though I’m sure you wouldn’t mind a little more) but let me cut to the chase. Here’s the question. Since I really respect your expert opinion (all right, a little more brown nosing wouldn’t hurt), I was wondering, if you could pick 4 and only 4 boxers as your favorite all-time pugilists…who would they be? Also give a few reasons why they are on your top 4 list. Here’s my top 4, of course I am no professional boxing analyst by any stretch of the imagination, but I am a true boxing fan and as we all know we are entitled to our own opinions!
1. Manny Pacquiao – Yes I am one of the many jumping on the Pacquiao bandwagon. I cant help it, he is the most exciting boxer in the sport right now and any time he jumps in the ring, the crowd jumps off their feet. Plus he defeated a couple legends in MAB, EM and JMM (I feel he won that fight)
2. Marvin Hagler- He is by far the greatest middleweight of all time and the only boxer I know of who has never been knocked down. (Everyone knows his 1 “knockdown” was really a slip) This man never took a step back and demolished everyone that was ever put in front of him. No one could hurt this guy, not even the great “Hit man” Hearns. I still believe Hagler won the Sugar Ray Leonard fight. Leonard a lot of points in my book when he refused to grant a rematch to Hagler.
3.Kosty Tszyu- A champ with a lot of class and a humble heart…not to mention a vicious right hand. He is one of the finest counter punchers I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. His comeback after a loss to Vince Phillips says a lot about the kind of champion he is.
4. George Foreman- I’m too young to remember him in his prime (maybe it’ because at the time I was a fetus) but his second run as champion was just remarkable. To regain the heavyweight title at age 45 is amazing and I don’t think any one has ever made a comeback as successful as George. Plus, watching his old tapes, man, this guy was a ferocious beast-like animal. George Foreman grill is a great thing too ha ha.
So there you have it: My humble opinion and my favorite 4 boxers of all time. Can’t wait to see your list Geno!

First and foremost, thank you for the mad props. I am glad that you have compared my mailbag to the others. They can cure insomnia. I wonder sometimes just how many people fall asleep while reading some of these pay sites that really don’t offer anything. Also, brown nosing is always welcome. Now a couple things before I list my top four of all time. Hagler beat Leonard in my opinion and the Pacman definitely beat JMM. Now, onto my list.
1. Mike Tyson. Mike Tyson got me into the sport. He has power, speed, and charisma and he went in there and knocked people out with ease. There was no feel out process and he brought an element to the game that has been gone for a long time and is sorely missed.
2. George Foreman. The “Punching Preacher” did shock the world and won the hearts of the public with his good nature and will. He won the title at 45 and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. I was a gleam in my dad’s eye when Foreman began his career, but I have watched his bouts with Norton, Frazier, and Roman, I am in awe. He was great in the 70’s and he was even better in his old age. The Foreman Grill…not impressed with, but you can’t argue with success.
3. Pernell Whitaker. This was my generation’s Sugar Ray Robinson. Whitaker was untouchable and when he was shot, he beat De La Hoya (in my opinion). He made it look easy and I never found him boring.
4. Joe Louis. One of the greatest champs of all time went out of his way to do what was right, and the government repaid the favor by screwing him over. He was fantastic and had such skill and not only that, defended his title on a regular basis.

I just like to ask you how true is it that JMM really didn’t really lose to Chris John and that John schooled JMM in their 12 round fight as reports have told it? There was a video already on the net showing JMM getting beaten by John. People in Indonesia were just over reacting to their countryman boxer. I am not actually a JMM fan, Pacfan actually and I just loved their draw fight back in 2004. Pac should’ve won that fight but I really can see JMM has the style and the power too. He just doesn’t have the charm that MAB has whenever he’s fighting. I was also wondering how good really Chris John is? Have you ever seen his fights? What do you think?

I didn’t get to see the fight, but I talked to some of my buddies in the business and they thought that Chris John won the fight, although it was close. The draw between Pacman and JMM was one of the most memorable wars that I have ever seen. I am a big fan of the Pacman as well and I would like to see him and JMM facing each other once again. Out of EM, MAB, and JMM, Marquez has the best chance to pull the upset. Chris John is undefeated, and has some skill, but I have questions about his chin.

Thanks for taking the time to speak with me. I feel Allan Green is a prospect on the rise but he may have been given a scare with the McCrary knockdown. He isn’t ready for Calzaghe, but he can post a fight with Beyer. How do you feel he does vs. Mario Veit, Jargen Brahmer, Tsypko, Mora and Manfredo?
Another question is, how do you feel about Pacquiao moving up to lightweight and perhaps even light welterweight? There are too many fights to be made, he has conquered everyone in his division. Pacquiao vs. Lazcano, Cotto, Casamayor, Corrales, Castillo and Freitas? And I feel Juan Urango is the best light welterweight, he can even beat Ricky Hatton. He’s mini-Mike Tyson, coming out to bully the Castillos, Cottos, Hattons, Witters, Margaritos and Corrales.
What do you think of all this?

You are welcome. Allan Green is a very good prospect and that McCrary fight was a positive thing because he proved that he can get knocked down and come back to win by a knockout. I would pick him to beat Veit, Brahmer, Tsypko, and most definitely Mora and Manfredo. Calzaghe may just be too good, period. I don’t know if Green will ever be ready.
Pacman moving up is risky, but the money may be up at a higher weight. So, money talks and it’ll probably talk him into challenging some of the big names that you mentioned. Juan Urango…I am still waiting for him to step up. He only has 16 fights at this time, so it’s a bit too early to say that he will run these great fighters out of the ring, but he is an exciting fighter on his way up.

Long time no talk to. The British boxing fans were hard on you about Hatton, but some times the truth is hard to handle. I do think Hatton just barely won. The flash knock down in round one was the only thing that I thought gave him just enough points, but the fact remains that he is a one style fighter and a PBF and De La Hoya. Bigger men would probably KO him. My questions are the belts fighters win and this is probably an easy question, but who are the pictures of on the belts? I always see the pictures but it is hard to make them out. A few days ago MAB was on the front of HBO’s boxing web site and he had his WBC belt across his shoulder and you could see what look like round buttons with pictures in them on the strap of the belt.

I know that Ring Magazine and the WBC place pictures on their title belts. I searched around and discovered that Vitali Klitschko’s WBC Heavyweight Title belt had pictures of Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis. So, it’s probably fair to say that the titles are in tribute to the men that made them the most popular and made the organizations the most money. It wasn’t an easy question Tom. IT WASN’T AN EASY QUESTION!!!

I think that the Ricky Hatton fan have invested so much into him as the national hero, that anything that is considered even remotely critical is quickly lashed out against. I am a Hatton fan, believe it or not, but I have to call it the way that I see it. You are one of the intelligent ones that can see that there is no ill will. If I candy-coated everything, my word would be worthless. So, I have to take the good with the bad, and usually, it’s all good. Sometimes I think that if people only knew that I was the president of the Mr. Belvedere fan club that they might just squash this anti-British rap that some people have given me. I also like that show Nanny 911 with that chubby nanny. Chubby…not bad, if you know what I’m saying.

Although I’m a Pacman fan and a Filipino, there’s really one Mexican legend out there that impressed me a lot, its Juan Manuel Marquez. I’ve watched recently his bout with Chris John and I strongly believe that JMM won that war. I love to see him fight with Pacman again before he retires. Would you agree with me if I assert that JMM is technically superior than EM and MAB? I still believe that he’s still a threat to Pac’s dominance in the division… he’s a very slick and technical boxer in spite of his age.

Juan Manuel Marquez really gave Pacman a go in their bout, although I thought that Manny won it. You are not alone when you say that you thought that JMM won the fight with Chris John. That defeat really hurt the career of Marquez. He was right there in the mix with the big names, but the loss has dropped him off of the radar. I do think that he is technically more sound but just not as talented as MAB and EM. I would like to see a rematch because it seemed that Marquez was able to control a lot of the bout, but the three knockdowns early and the rounds here and there that Pacman won was enough to win it. Had there been no knockdowns, Marquez may have won it hands down. So there is intrigue there, but the public, for the most part, has forgotten about JMM. Out of sight, out of mind. That would be a good name for a horror movie: “Out of sight, out of mind.” It’s about this blind guy that is, get this, out of his mind. Okay, I have to work on it, I know….

The “Screw Pay Per View” campaign is going strong. Many people feel the same way that you do. They want to see boxing, but they don’t want to bend over and get it in order to watch. I am so sick of HBO especially and their consistent and mediocre pay per screws that really prevent boxing from becoming more popular. There are certain events that merit a pay per view, but to put every bout that would have been on ABC ten years ago, on PPV with a price tag of 50 dollars is wrong. The promoters are looking for the quick fix. If they really pushed to get boxing on network television and built up fighters, eventually leading to a pay per view. Or, if you are going to do a PPV, how about lowering the price and making the under card worth watching? I know that it’s a crazy idea, but it may just work.

My friend. You’ve probably already read my thoughts on Bautista, so I will talk about something else. Hmm. What should we discuss? You like coffee? I drink it like a madman. There is this delicious drink called a “Caramel Iced Latte,” and I like it a lotty…(lame joke intentionally). I’m a big fan of Seattle’s Best coffee as well. You get these people that say Starbucks is the best, but I disagree. Hey Seattle’s Best…I just gave you a free ad. Send me some free coffee please.
Fighting Spirit is the name, but I have never been into that animation. I like South Park A LOT. I watch that all of the time. Have you seen the episode of South Park that was a tribute to Rocky? It surrounded a little league game, but the father, Randy, was fighting with other fathers at the games. He had to train and fight this guy “Bat Dad,” a father that dressed like Batman. When Bat Dad dropped him and walked away, Mick told Randy to “Get up you bum” and when he arose, he said: “Hey Bat Dad, I didn’t hear no bell.” It was freaking hilarious.

With the recent win of Barrios against the undefeated Nagy, can you give your views on Pacman-Barrios. I have not seen Barrios’ fights so I got no idea. Also, why did the paths of Barrera/Morales and Barrios did not meet? Or have I missed them?

What’s going on my friend? I don’t see Barrios beating Pacman because his chin isn’t the greatest. HBO is trying to hype him up, and he is exciting and interesting, but I wouldn’t put money on him being a big challenge for Manny. If you stand in front of Pacman, you get knocked out. Most fighters train 3 months. I believe it to be a relatively universal amount of time that trainers use. They don’t want their fighter over training and going into a bout stale. I think that Manny will be fine and will win with relative ease in his next bout. I want to wish you many blessings as well my friend, and I am glad that you enjoy my mailbag. I am here to entertain and when I hear that I am succeeding, I blush like a schoolgirl.

Welcome to the mailbag my friend. I’m glad that you enjoy it. After Larios and EM, I would like to see him take on Acelino Freitas. There’s a lot of talk about a Diego Corrales bout, but I think that he is too big for Manny, but Freitas is probably the perfect opponent at this time. He is respected, but limited, in my opinion.

Great column you have! I’m avid fan of PACMAN, I have a prediction that MAB & PAC rematches: Pacman will win. I think MAB is pursuing PACMAN to rematch with him as early as possible because he’s getting older/tired on boxing! As we take a look last fight of MAB to Juarez, we saw how slow he is. So, if rematch happen next year MAB can’t absorb the power of PACMAN. What do you think Mr. Genius…GENO?

Nice to hear from you my friend. Mr. Genius? I like that and I will certainly add it to my list of nicknames, right above “Humping Geno.” I don’t think that MAB wants anything to do with Pacman. He just doesn’t have it anymore. He is slower now and that is not a good if he’s going to face a prime Manny again. I hope that the rematch doesn’t happen. MAB has been such a great warrior that I don’t want to see him carried away on a stretcher.

I really appreciate the information and insights that you share in this site. It takes boxing as well as non-boxing fans a simple glimpse of the different facets of the sport. I am a boxing fan since I saw the fights of the FAB-4=EM, MP, MBB, and JMM. My question is: Do you agree that Manny Pacquiao’s power is really a vital factor to which he has been able to withstand the elite Mexican warriors?
It seems in my observation that even with his draw decision with JMM and his loss to EM, it is his power which prevented these Mexican fighters to fully exploit the huge advantage they had in those aforementioned fights…I think he has a delicate package of speed and power which largely made up for his tactical/technical deficiencies. In your opinion, what’s the future of the Fab-4?

I agree that Pacman’s unnatural punching power has been the difference. MAB and EM may have been able to compete and possibly beat Pacman in their primes, but that power shot that has devastated so many would still be a huge factor. The problem with EM and MAB is that they are at the end of their careers and they are trying to compete against a great boxer in his prime. As for the future of the “fab 4,” I would say that JMM has something left, and Manny is still riding high and has several good years remaining, but EM and MAB are just about done. I love your site man! Every week I can’t wait your new release of RSR mailbag. I found your site just 2 weeks ago, and I am a Pacfan & your right Geno: Pac should avoid Corrales and Castillo. They are too big for Manny and have punching power. I want a rematch with BARRERA because there is no way MAB can win over Pac. He is too slow too old for Pac and the WBC & IBF belt should on the waist of Super Pac.

Thanks for the props. Hmm. It’s hard to tell at this time, but with a name like “Boom Boom,” he has to be a good fighter and with the support that he has, apparently he is very good and if you think that he is a future champion, then he probably will be. I am very eager to see him step up. More power to you as well…

What do you think would be the chances of Pacman fighting MAB?

I think that Pacman will probably fight MAB again because HBO and Golden Boy Promotions will try to milk MAB for as much money as they can before he goes to the nursing home. They probably take him aside and tell him: “Marco, you are going to kick Manny’s ass all over the place. Ass all over the place. Over here. Over there. Throw your hands in the air.” As Barrera dances out of the room, they just shrug and say: “I think that he bought it. At least we’ll make a bundle.”

You said it right Geno…it will be suicide if MAB faces Pacman again…well money talks and Pacman definitely needs a belt, unfortunately MAB has it!!!!

Hope your doing great. I am one of the million Filipino that love boxing. Among of those fighters of the Philippines versus Mexico, whether we like it or not there is one of them that is going to lose. I hope it will not be Manny, Bautista…etc. Who do you think that will loss this fight?

Unfortunately there has to be a winner and a loser. We are all people and hopefully we can all get beyond our differences, but then all the fun would be gone. Mexico versus the Philippines is interesting like every other country vs. country match up because styles are different. It’s like when Van Damme went to Thailand and faced Tong Po. Po kicked ass and the American style of kickboxing couldn’t compete. Maybe there isn’t much of a comparison, but I just love that movie: Kickboxer.

Yeah, you’re right…Manny is much improved now than before he and MAB fought in 2002…I saw him training and he is very strong…Emanuel Steward is not the most horrible host I ever seen in TV either.

What is going on? I like Emanuel Steward as an announcer. He is honest and stands up to Lampley even when Lampley threatens to go old school on him. Manny is an exceptional boxer with great power and skill.

My question is: Is it possible for Pacman to face Corrales at 130 pounds? If that happens, what is the chance of Pac? You’re right Geno, Barrera should rethink his idea to rematch with Pac. Actually, Barrera questioned by one of boxing site if he wanted Pac next he never answer the question. There’s no way MAB can beat Super Pac. He never respected Pac’s ability in boxing, but that’s understandable. How can you praise a man who beat you badly, in humiliation? EM one of the interviews he said that that’s why Pac beat him because of exhaustion and not through the punching power of Pac. EM talking smack again. There is no comparison. EM won by 2 points, but was KO’d by Manny.
My prediction for Pac’s future is a KO of Larios in 5 rounds, but I must say Larios has BALLS because he accepted to fight the # 2 pound 4 pound super star, unlike JMM & BARRERA.

I say that Larios has balls because he is a man, not just because he accepted a fight with Manny. Smack talk is part of boxing and EM and MAB are going to make excuses and talk a lot about Pacman because of the way that they lost. Okay…take care and keep reading my friend…
