Ring Magazine retains Pacman as king, but hangs him on thin line

However, World Boxing Council (WBC) president Don Jose Sulaiman, like some experts, detests the judges? decision and believes that Marquez was robbed of a fight that he clearly won.

?The judges say that Pacquiao won. I saw the fight and all I can say is that Marquez did not deserve to lose. He did not deserve to lose. It?s an injustice,? said Sulaiman in a report posted at the ABS-CBN website.

Robert Hoyle scored it a 114-114 draw, while Dave Moretti and Glenn Trowbridge saw the fight 115-113 and 116-112 in favor of the 32-year-old Pacquiao.

Sulaiman also said that Pacquiao has hinted his retirement because of his uneventful performance last Sunday.

?Pacquiao was not his usual self. It?s a fight he took part in to win $25-million, minimum. I think Pacquiao?s career is close to the end and he?s definitely involved in politics,? said Sulaiman. ?He?s a federal lawmaker and a boxer involved in politics who is so committed to his country, well, during that time he won?t think about boxing. Boxing is second best.?

Pacquiao held three world titles in the WBC at lightweight, super feather and flyweight. The WBC flyweight crown was Pacquiao?s first world title, wherein he won it via an eighth-round technical knockout over Thai Chatchai Sasakul in 1998.

On the other hand, Pacquiao still remained the pound-for-pound No.1 fighter in the world by The Ring Magazine?s mythical ratings.

The Ring Magazine decided to retain Pacquiao?s status as the best in the world despite his close controversial win over Marquez.

?In the end, though, we decided to leave the pound-for-pound rankings as is for one simple reason: All but one member of the Ratings Advisory Panel who provided input and the entire Ring Editorial Board believed it was the right thing to do,? wrote Michael Rosenthal at The Ring Magazine website.

The Ring was considering placing No.2 ranked Floyd Mayweather Jr. above Pacquiao after the latter?s disappointing performance or to leave the No.1 spot blank and let Pacquiao and Mayweather duke out for the pound-for-pound title.

?All that said, we also feel we should add something here: Pacquiao survives as The Rings?s No. 1 fighter by a hair. Should he stumble again or Mayweather turn in an outstanding performance, a new king probably would be crowned.?
